Grinch confronts Claus at party
A foreign socialist . named
Santa Claus, an expected
visitor at the second annual
Student Action Fiont (SAF)
children's Christmas party, told
the children, "It isn't easy
being Santa Claus."
Claus, speaking in the
Nebraska Union earlier this
week, said his big problems
include striking elves and
constant attention from his
wife. His advancing age is
another factor, he said,
complaining of the difficulty
of "whipping up presents when
you're old."
The Grinch, a character
from television fantasy, has
been suspected of "ripping off
my presents," Claus
commented, and he warned the
children attending to watch
out for the creature.
During Claus's absense, the
40 Lincoln area children and
their SAF big brothers and
sisters received a visit from the
Grinch, whose evil
countenance was distorted by
a stocking mask. Also known
as Neil Stenberg, he promptly
tried to steal the gifts. Only
Claus's fortuitous return
prevented the crime.
With promises to reform,
the Grinch was permitted to
help distribute presents, but
the aid of the children was
solicited to keep him honest.
Few of the children, placed
with SAF through social
workers or through the Lincoln
Action Program (LAP) were
interested in lap-sitting,
apparently much to Claus's
disappointment.
When a student accepts a
little brother or sister, he sets
his own goals for the
relationship. According to Ann
Sulek, deciding to spend an
hour a week with the child is
typical. She said she has
become a friend to Kathy, her
charge, but "I realize I'm a
very small part of her life."
When Sulek met Kathy a

year ago, Kathy was very shy,
but is now quite open, she said.
The child has made other
improvements, but Sulek
credits Kathy's growth in age
from 11 to 1 2 for the change.
Each of the children was to
receive gifts from his big
brother or sister.
