Nebraska claims There was no victory party Tuesday when it was announced that Nebraska was named national college football champion by the United Press International. It's the first UPI national championship ever won by Nebraska, but its significance attracted little excitement at. the Cornhusker football camp. The Cornhuskers, you see, are lighting tor an undisputed Huskers drop third straight: Cip seeking best combination Nebraska basketball coach Joe Cipriano didn't promise any miracles before the Cornhuskers opened their 1971-72 campaign. He was, like every other coach in the nation, optimistic. But he was also cautious when he discussed the Huskers' chances. 'We'll have to do some experimenting," Cipriano said last month. "It's going to take awhile until we find the best combination to put on the floor." Cipriano is probably still looking for that "best combination" because the Huskers stand 1-3 on the season. Nebraska, which lost back-to-back games at the NU Coliseum over the weekend, dropped a 75-53 decision to Duquesne at Pittsburgh Ice hockey club tries meeting The intramurals ice hockey club will have an organizational meeting Thursday, Dec. 9, in the Nebraska Union at 7 p.m. The room of the meeting will be posted in the Union. 2 D AT-1 1:40,1:10 ENDS THURS. 2:40,4:20 6,7:40 9.20 I IMARELIUEQAHU p ii k-u 4, wjirt y u i. a Rated X-Mo One Under 18 SCHLITZ H. xO J I national championship. That's something they didn't enjoy last year when they shared national titles with Texas. The UPI, which holds its final ratings before the bowl games, named Texas as national champion last year followed by Ohio State and Nebraska. The Associated Press, which waits until after the bowl results, moved Nebraska from third after the Monday for its third straight setback. Nebraska never led in the game. The Cornhuskers cut a 34-24 half time deficit into only a six-point disadvantage in the second half, but faltered late in the game. Senior center Chuck Jura, who is averaging 20.8 points, led the Huskers again with 22 points followed by junior guard Tom Gregory with 1 1 . Duquesne was led by sophomore Lionel Billingy with 1 7 points. Cipriano didn't return to Lincoln with the team Tuesday and wasn't available for comment. But if you like to dive into mind reading, Cipriano is probably thinking about one promise he did make before the season started. "We're going to win more games than we lose," said Cipriano. "But it's going to be an interesting season. I really don't know what to expect." The Cornhuskers will try to rebound Saturday at the Coliseum when they entertain Southern Methodist. Nebraska quarterback and co-captain Jerry Tagge says the team will be ready to resume practice. He doesn't think it will be hard to get back into the proper football attitude after a vacation in Hawaii. "Everybody knows what's at stake," said Tagge. "Sure, we went to Hawaii with a relaxed attitude and probably didn't play our best game, but I don't think there's any reason to worry about our being ready to practice for the Orange Bowl." Regardless of what happens in the Orange Bowl, Nebraska will still be recorded as the national champion in 1971. But don't tell the Nebraska players or coaches. Their only true national title can be won in Miami New Year's night. After all, who talks about Texas when you mention the 1970 national champion? The Cornhuskers don't want to be placed in that position.
