The stadium, home of the Hawaii Islanders minor league baseball team, gains national attraction Saturday night Aztecs, Shockers challenge undefeated Husker cagers A veteran Wichita State team and a San Diego St. squad tagged as "on the move" invade the Colisium this weekend to challenge Nebraska's 1-0 Huskers. San Diego St. comes to town Friday night for the second stop of their three-game midwestern trip. The Aztecs opened their season Wednesday night in Boulder against Colorado, the same night the Huskers whipped Wyoming 81-63 in their season opener. WITCHITA moves in Saturday with a new coach and their three top scorers back from last year. The Shockers, now under Harry Miller, came within one point of Nebraska, 72-7 1 , last year in Wichita. Leading Miller's crew will be Ail-American candidate Terry Benton, a 6-8 senior center who ranked seventh in the nation last year in rebounding with 17 per game. He also added 16 points per outing last Intramurals add cross country run Gary Lyle of Theta Chi won the intramural cross country meet Nov. 18, edging 29 other entrants on a cold and windy day. Lyle's time of 11:40 over the 2.2 mile Pioneer Park course edged second place Steve Lind, an independent, by seven seconds. Third place went to Dave Bradley of Alpha Tau Omega and fourth went to Dan Connelly of Delta Upsilon. Intramural Director Phil Sienna indicated that the run, held for the first time this year, will be a regular intramural event next year. In the intramural water basketball tournament, Alpha Tau Omega catured trophies in both the shallow and deep water divisions. Second place in the shallow water league went to Phi Gamma Delta and third was a tie between Sigma Phi Epsilon and Beta Theta Pi. Trailing the ATO's in the deep water league were Theta Xi, Beta Theta Pi and Delta Tau Delta. University faculty members also held a two-mile run, which saw nine runners compete on the indoor East Stadium track on Nov. 22. Chuck Sayward, a member of the philosophy department faculty, won the event with a time of 10:39 over the two-mile distance. Also back for the Shockers are 6-6 senior forward Ron Harris, last year's leading scorer at 18.6 points per game, and junior guard Vince Smith, a 14,9 point per game scorer a year ago. THESE THREE form the nucleus of a Wichita team which will try to improve on last season's 10-16 record. Junior college transfer Virgil Tucker and two sophomores, Bill Lang and Greg Boxberger, are also being heavily counted on. The Saturday meeting with the Shockers will be the seventh meeting in the Wichita Nebraska series, with each team owning three victories. Friday's foe, San Diego St., will revolve their attack around a pair of quick guards, Jimmy Wilkins and Jimmy Harris. HARRIS WAS a second handily defeated second place Roy Sneddon of the civil engineering department (11:20) and the third place Bob Brown of the educational psychology department (11:56). Other participants in the envent, in order of finish, were Tom Bake, accounting, J. Harris, business administration, Tom Phillips, accounting', Neil Robinson, university television, Jim Carr, chemistry and H.E. Baumgarten, chemistry. Other similar runs for faculty staff members and graduate students will be held during the year. IT'S QUITE a contrast for team all-Pacific 8 selection last year after averaging 13.6 points per game for the Aztecs. He hit double figures in scoring in 19 games. Wilkins, a 5-11 jumping jack, contributed 10 points per game last year and despite his size, is considered an excellent pro prospect by the Aztec coaching staff. Junior college transfer Chris McMurray, a 6-7, 215 pounder from Sacramento, figures to man the post Friday night. He averaged 20 points and 17.7 rebounds per game last season. FLANKING McMurray along the fron line will probably be Larry Jones and Jeff Pete. Jones is another transfer student and Pete is a junior letterman who averaged 8.5 points per outing last year. Nebraska, playing three games in the first four days of the season, will go on the road for the first time Wednesday when they visit Duquesne. R & I sponsors Rockies ski trip The Recreation Department is sponsoring a ski trip to Estes Park, Colo, over the Christmas vacation break. The group will leave Jan. 2 and return the 9th. The deadline for signing up for the trip is Dec. 20. Anyone interested should contact the Recreation office, 1740 Vine. Cost will depend on the number of people participating, but will cover transportation, lodging, ski equipment rental and food. A basketball league for faculty and staff members and graduate students is also being organized. Deadline for entering teams is Dec. 10 and play will start after Christmas vacation. It's also quite a contrast to meet lowly Hawaii nine days after playing Oklahoma. But Nebraska coach Bob Devaney isn't concerned about his team's attitude. WE HAVE TO win impressively," said Devaney after the Huskers went through a practice Tuesday afternoon. "We have to protect our No. 1 rating." , ,. t When Nebraska first scheduled the Hawaii trip, it was designed primarily as a recruiting gimmick. But now it's developed into protecting that No. 1 ranking. Hawaii Coach Dave Holmes doesn't think the Huskers arc looking completely past Hawaii either. "The thing that impressed me about Nebraska all year is that they're prepared for each game," said Holmes. Sherrer, who has been slowed by a groin injury recently, has gained 1,1 14 yards this season in 1 90 carries. Junior Elroy Chong took over the . Rainbows', quarterback duties two weeks ago and will direct the attack against Nebraska Saturday. Hawaii's defense has also suffered from injuries this season, but should be healthy for the Huskers. "WE SEEM TO have injured players coming out of the woodwork," said Holmes. "It seems ridiculous, but these players are thrilled just to be on the same field as Nebraska." Nebraska hasn't had much time to prepare for this game. The exchange of game films didn't take place last week. It's just a matter of Nebraska having better players than Hawaii. There's no strategy.
