SOME CRITICS, downgrade
the Heisman because some of
its recipients have been busts in
professional football. They
point particularly to Navy's
Joe Bellino (I960), Oregon
State's Terry Baker (1962),
Notre Dame's John Juarte
(1964) and Beban.
On the other hand, a
number of Heisman winners
have gone on to excell as pros:
for example, Wisconsin's Alan
Ameche 91954), Notre Dame's
Paul Hornung (1956), LSU's
Bill Cannon (1959( and
Southern Cal's Mike Garett
(1965) . And in any case, the
Heisman is supposed to be an
award for collegiate, not
professional performance.
Still, the Heisman can be a
psychological burden for a pro.
Roger Staubach, Navy's 1963
winner now playing
professionally for the Dallas
Cowboys, has turned his
trophy over to his young
daughters who use it as a
hobby horse.
"If I make it as a pro,"
Staubach expalins, "I'll put it
on display in the living room.
Until then, my daughters can
have it."
