Head basketball coach Joe Cipriano has shipped five varsity players to the freshman team for Saturday's 7:35 p.m. scrimmage at the Coliseum to "give more varsity players an opportunity to play." Included in the list of varsity transplants are Rick Brown and Tom Novak, starting guards on last year's frosh team, and former freshman starter Bob Allen at forward. Forward Tom Bryan, a junior who worked into playing time late in the season with the varsity last year, will also join the freshman team and so will redshirt Dave Nuss, . a 6-8 sophomore from Scottsbluff. "We'll start the regular freshman team and then work the varsity players into the lineup later in the half," said Cipriano. "I just want to give more varsity players an. opportunity to play under a game situation." Rap Lino 475-571 6-12 triQtvsaf KS!( oenwne V( B DRAFT U Vl ; CHfe? beer-' -y senior season. Cipriano was still uncertain about his starting lineup, but said three seniors have assured themselves of starting jobs for Saturday's scrimmage. Chuck Jura, the Huskers' second-leading scorer last year, will start at center and Mike Peterson will get the call at one of the forward positions. Al Nissen, who has had an impressive month of practicing, will start at a guard spot. Juniors Tom Gregory and Randy Watts are battling for the other guard position and Brendy Lee and Cal Christline are fighting for the other forward spot. Guard Tony Riehl, a junior from Kentucky, has been slowed with injuries and hasn't been able to make a serious bid at a starting position. All-sports tickets will be honored at the game. Dvony against by Jim Johnston Missouri, playing its typical six-man defensive line, held Oklahoma's Wishbone-T to just 20 points and didn't allow a touchdown in the second half. Bob Devaney knows that. OKAY, then, all Nebraska has to do is adopt Missouri's defensive strategy and the Cornhuskers can stop Oklahoma's powerful offense. Right? Well, maybe partially right. "It's not that easy," says. Devaney. "You can't just make a radical defense change in a week and expect everything to turn out good." . DEVANEY said, however, that the Nebraska coaching staff is studying several defenses used against Oklahoma this season to "come up with the right formula." In talking about Missouri's defense, Devaney credited the play of the Tigers' defensive ends for the reason the Sooners' offense was quieted. "Oklahoma doesn't seem to realize that a defensive end can play that lead blocker and still make the tackle," said Devaney. "Missouri's ends played a big part in stopping that wide stuff." BUT FEW teams have been able to keep the Sooners; off the scoreboard, by stopping "that wide stuff." The Sooners, who lead the nation in rushing offense, are averaging 481 yards rushing and 45 points. That's been the success story of the Wishbone. But Devaney doesn't think the Wishbone is unstoppable. "Someday somebody will come up with a real effective way of stopping the Wishbone," said Devaney. 'There's been some teams that have run it and lost." DEVANEY said the key is stopping the Wishbone is to force the Sooners into long yardage situations. "Oklahoma hasn't been in many' long yardage situations this season," said Devaney, "and the few times they've been in those situations Jack Mildren has managed to come up with the big pass play." The Sooners have attempted just 56 passes in nine games this season, but have completed 27 of those passes for 736 yards. prpors OU s Wishbone-I "THEY TRY to surprise you with the pass," said Devaney. "We have to be mentally prepared and thinking all the time. That's just as important as being ready fundamentally." Concerning last year's 28-12 Nebraska win over Oklahoma, Devaney said the Huskers didn't play a really good game. "We weren't completely prepared defensively against Oklahoma last year," said Devaney. "We've definitely learned from some mistakes last year."
