Otis' 'Freedom Flight' phenomenal
Review by
Bart Becker
What I'm going to talk
about is three remarkable
people, and their records. One
of the records is remarkable
itself, one is very enjoyable and
one is terrible.
Shuggie Otis' Freedom
Flight is phenomenal. That's all
I need to say but let me
explain.
Otis is about 17 or 18 years
old by now. His dad is Johnny
Otis. Otis was "discovered" a
year or so ago by Al Kooper.
Freedom Flight is his third
album, counting his
collaboration with Kooper.
And what do you think he
does on it?
WELL, LET ME tell ya. He
wrote all the wordsmusic to
all but one of the seven cuts.

NO ONE UNDER 18 ADM.
He arranged the album. He
does all the lead vocals, some
background vocals with himself
and plays guitar, bass, organ,
piano, drums, sleigh bells,
orchestra bells, bottleneck
guitar and tack piano.
You still say "so what?"
Well, Otis has put together one
of the finest albums of
rockbluessoul to come off
the presses in a while.
Instrumentally, the album is
a joy. Vocally, it falters a little
bit. On most of the cuts with
vocals, Otis is a little weak.
However, when the
instrumental, takes your
attention away from the vocal,
the vocal doesn't intrude.
I SUSPECT NOT too many
people will buy this record. I
think being in the minority will
be a pleasant experience in this
case.
Since I'm predicting, I
predict that Howard Wales' and
Jerry Garcia's Hooterroll
album would sell less copies
than Freedom Flight if it
weren't for Garcia's name on
the cover.
BUT SUPRISE-Wales is the
standout on the album About
now you're asking yourself
"who's Howard Wales?" He
plays keyboard instruments.
Played them on the Grateful
Deads' American Beauty
album, among others. And he
is one of the finest around.
Hooterroll is well done. If
you're a jazzkeyboard buff,
you'll dig this. If you're
expecting the Grateful Dead,
save your money.
I suspect somebody's
jumping on the Lenny Bruce
revival banawagon with Lenny
BruceWhat I was Arrested
For: the performances that got
Lenny Bruce busted. The
material doesn't seem to be
very well chosen, the recording
is muddy, the cuts seem
haphazardly thrown together.
I DIG BRUCE a lot. I dig
the things he stood for. I think
he had a very important role in
bringing about many of the
standards of morality we honor
today. He didn't let anybody
or anything off the hook.
I was in about the eighth
grade when I first read Bruce's
books. I was kind of shocked
and a little bit thrilled. My
elders read them and were
shocked and disgusted.
Maybe I'm turning into the
kind of person Bruce would
cut to shreds with a minute of
monologue. Maybe I'm getting
too cool to appreciate what
he's saying. But the world is
more sophisticated now, as
well. We don't shock as easily.
And while most of the things
Bruce was fighting still need to
be fought (censorship, etc.) the
material presented here bores
me.
IF YOU WANT to
introduce yourself to Bruce,
buy the books first. If you
want to know how he
presented the material when he
performed, find me and ask for
the record. No use all of us
suckering for the same shell
game.
