R & I cage season begins The 1971-72 intramural basketball season began Monday night with 210 teams entering league play. The tournament includes about 30 more entries than last year, and Intramural Director Phil Sienna said that over 600 games will be required to complete regular season play. Intramural play is limited to locations at the Men's Physical Education building and at the University High gymnasium. Noting the lack of intramural facilities available, the number of team entries, Sienna said he expects the season to last into March. m "I've never seen a school with as much interest in basketball, Sienna, formerly with the intramural department at Oklahoma University, said. "If any school needs facilities, Nebraska does." Sienna said he was pleased that there were about 25 more independent entries than last year because "It's usually hard to get the independents interested and get them to want to get a team together." He emphasized that cooperation between teams and officials and will be essential to the success of the season. He also urged team managers to keep in frequent contact with the Intramural Office. p- I i JLSf. rraLJ LU" , --- 1 I It"'"". 1 ' 1 "- T' 1 1 1 V - v" . iwm, i. J ,,.. But those who criticized the Kansas State quarterback at the beginning of the season aren't laughing anymore. Morrison, who was named Big Eight back of the week this week, has thrown for 567 yards the last two games in leading the Wildcats to two straight conference wins. IN FACT, Morrison has surpassed Nebraska's Jerry Tagge for the conference lead in passing yardage. Morrison will direct the Wildcats against Nebraska Saturday at Manhattan, Kan., at 1 :30 p.m. "Morrrison had trouble completing his passes at the R & I announces golf champions Steve Timmons of Acacia captured the all-university and all-fraternity individual title in the intramural golf tournament, but Phi Delta Theta captured the fraternity team championship with Sigma Chi second. The all-dorm individual golf champ was John Enyeart of Harper II, who shot a two-round total of 161. Timmons' winning total was 147. Runners up behind Harper II in the dorm team championship race were Harper III and Cather V. BUT SINCE Kansas State coach Vince Gibson decided to go back to a passing game for which the Wildcats have been known the last three years, Morrison has developed into an outstanding passer. "Kansas State was running out of the I formation at the beginning oi the season," said Devaney, "but they weren't progressing as well as they should. So Vince went back to what he's done the last three years. In the past three years, however, the Wildcats had Big Eight passing king Lynn Dickey at the helm. Morrison had a tough act to follow, but he's-now in contention to lead Kansas State to its fourth straight Big Eight passing crown. NEBRASKA presently leads the Big Eight in passing with a 172.7 average while the Wildcats trail with 163.3-yard average. Nebraska, which leads every defensive department, is allowing just 92.6 passing yards per game. Morrison's leading receiver is sophomore tight end Henry Childs. Childs has caught 13 passes for 234 yards, including seven for 90 yards and two touchdowns in a comeback win against Oklahoma State last week. "IF YOU'RE not having success with a certain type of offense it's still a gamble to go to something different in the middle of the season," observed Devaney, "but the move has definitely paid off for Kansas State." Devaney is not worried about a psychological letdown against Kansas State, the last team Nebraska plays before the Thanksgiving game with Oklahoma. NEBRASKA reserve slotback Glen Garson is listed as a doubtful to make the trip to Manhattan. Linebacker Bill Sloey, injured in the Oregon game, is likely to make his first trip of the season Saturday.
