Undefeated frosh teams tangle Iowa State and Nebraska send undefeated freshmen teams to battle in what could be one of the top freshman contests in the Midwest this year. Kickoff is at 1:30 in Memorial Stadium. The Huskers' leading rusher is I-back Greg Pilkington, a six-foot, 195-pounder from Sterling, Colo. Pilkington has ground out 114 yards in 26 carries and one touchdown. PILKINGTON said he was recruited by Colorado University in nearby Boulder and by Wyoming, among other schools. He chose Nebraska because, i liked the winning tradition here. I picked this school because it's number one. It's a challenge to be a part of the team." Pilkington said he feels the biggest change from high school to freshman football is "the competition's a lot stiffer and there's a lot harder hitting." Despite the team's 2-0 record, the business major feels the Huskers have yet to fulfill their potential this year. "WE HAVEN'T shown people at all what we can do," he sid. "I think Iowa State is going to be our stiffest test this season. From the films, it looks like they're real quick off the line and they've got a pretty fair passing attack we'll have to watch." Iowa State's leading rusher is tailback Todd Nelson, a 5-11, 190-pound product of Harlan, la. who doubles as the team's punter. Two Cyclones who may be familiar to fans from eastern Nebraska are backup quarterback Kevin Sigler from Council Bluffs and safety Jim Wingender, a six-foot, 190-pound graduate of Omaha Creighton Prep. Wingender also returns punts and kickoff s for the Cyclones. The Nebraska frosh will be seeking their tenth straight win in the series with Iowa State, and their ninth straight win since the 1969 season. Cross country. Continued from page 7. season they re hoping to avoid that problem. We'te a much better team than last year," said K-State coach DeLoss Dodds, "but it's going to be tough. Kansas is undefeated and they've got to be considered a contender. Nebraska is going to be tough on its home course and Colorado might be labeled a darkhorse, although they lost a dual last weekend in Lincoln." K-State is paced by veterans Howe and Rick Hitchcock, both seniors. Howe is a sub-four-minute miler and won the conference cross country title as a sophomore. Hitchcock was second to NU's Greg Carlberg in last year's cross country run and has been clocked at 13:16 for three miles on the track. Kansas State is the team to beat. They'll present problems for Unger and the NU squad, as well as the rest of the Big Eight teams. If Unger is to win he must run away from Howe in the first three and a half miles, because Howe will have better speed at the end. It should be quite a race to watch.
