League of Young Voters sets registration drive The University's League of Young Voters will set up booths next week to try to register up to 14,000 UNL students, according to Mike Nelson, state coordinator of the league. Voter registration booths will be set up in the City and East Campus Unions as well as the University dormitories. Nelson said. Eleven other colleges across the state are conducting similar drives. BOOTHS IN THE Unions will be open 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Monday - Friday, Nelson said, and registrars will be in the following dormitories 11 a.m. - I p.m.: Monday, Abel-Sandoz; Tuesday, Selleck; Wednesday, Cather-Pound and WRH; Thursday, Harper, Schramm, Smith; and Friday, The Nebraska Center on East Campus. Students may register in Lancaster County or their home towns. Nelson said. "We recognize there are pros and cons t.. registering here and at home by mail," he said. If students chose to register in Lancaster County, forms have been supplied by the Lancaster County Electoral Commissioner which they can fill out at the booths. Nelson explained. IF THEY CHOOSE to register at home, he said, the booth will also have form letters which the students can fill out and send to the county clerks in their home county. "Either way, we recommend they bring proof of their date of birth," he added. To qualify as a Nebraska voter, an individual 18 years of age or older must have lived in the state for the last six months (since May 1st), Nelson said. To register in the city of their choice, he continued, they must have lived in the city 40 days (since Sept. 20) and the precinct 10 days. NELSON SAID the voter registration drive, co-sponsored by the League, ASUN and the Nebraska Student Government Association, has had "excellent cooperation from Lancaster County's electoral commissioner." This is in contrast with county clerks in smaller towns who have, at times, "refused to let students register," Nelson said. Workers from the Lancaster County Commissioner's office will be on campus during the drive, but students will sit in the booths. Nelson said. He asked that any interested students attend a training session at 2:30 p.m. either Wednesday .or Thursday in the ASUN office. Why ever accept less than the best?
