"Houseparents are in some cases more capable of relating to the fraternity men than a housemother is," Dennis Confer, president of the Interfraternity Council, said. For instance, it is "hard for a housemother to understand a drug problem," he said. Hiring houseparents saves the fraternities money, Confer said. They receive only room and board while housemothers also received a salary. Confer noted that fraternities today have some trouble attracting a housemother. Fewer women want the position and most .would prefer work in a sorority house, he stated. The duties of a housemother included ordering food, planning menus and serving as a watchdog to make sure University rules weren't violated. Also, they used to teach manners and proper conduct. Many of the young housemothers do help in the kitchen, preparing menus or budgeting kitchen expenses. Most of the houseparents still conduct etiquette classes for the pledges, though much of the instruction is informal. Joanne and Jerry Bartek of Delta Tau Delta give most of their lessons through announcements at dinner.
