Put yourself in David
Jaynes' place.
You'te a sophomore
quarterback for a major college
football team. You've never
started a -college game in your
life. One hour before a game
against the No. 1 rated team in
the nation, the head coach
comes over and says: "David,
you're going to start today."
YOU WALK ONTO the
field and 68,331 red-dressed
fans are 'breathing down your
neck. In the first half you fail
to move your team past the
50-yard-line, lose three fumbles
and don't record a first down.
You lose the game, 55-0.
You're team rushes for minus
4 2 yards and you -eat the
football all afternoon. Okay,
how do you feel?
If you're Jaynes you sit in
the corner of the Kansas
dressing room, cut the tape
away from your heavily taped
legs and say: "1 feel lousy, 1
was Teally embarrassed out
there."
Jaynes, Kansas' highly
recTuit-ed sophomore
quarterback who once turned
down Alabama's Bear Bryant,
experienced what all
quarterbacks have experienced
against Nebraska's Big Red
Black Shirt defense. He lost 44
yards rushing and completed
just seven of 21 passes.
"'1 WASN'T TOO happy
about starting the game in the
first place "said Jaynes. "1 was
told an hour before the game
that 1 would start. It's an ugly
feeling to get your first start
against the No. 1 team."
Jaynes, who had raised
Jayhawk hopes after leading
Kansas to a big win over
Kansas State last week, said he
didn't know what to expect
when the game started.
"Coach (Don) Fambrough
just told me that things might
not always go my way, but 1
had to stick in there," said
Jaynes. "This is the first time
I've ever seen Nebraska play
and they were incredible.
Unger leads cross-country team
Nebraska's cross country
team, led by sophomore Bob
Unger, claimed its second
straight dual win Saturday.
The Cornhuskers scored a
19-43 win over Iowa State at
Pioneers Park. Unger set the
individual pace by touring the
four-mile course in 20:04.8.
Nebraska stands 2-1 in dual
competition.
The results:
1. Bob Unger, N, 20:04 8 ; 2.
Ryan Eichner, IS, 20:16, 3. Lynn
Hall, N, 20:24; 4. Dan Speck, N,
20:32; 5. Jim Hawkins, N, 20:37;

NebraskaNi defense is five times
better than Kansas State's
-defense.
That's quite a statement
when you consider that the
Wildcats were No. 2 in the
nation against the rush two
weeks ago and held Colorado
to only 97 yards rushing.
"1 lenow K-State was
suposed to have a good defense
when we played them," said
Jaynes, but theyre nothing
like Nebraska. I had time to
pass against K-State, but
Nebraska just didn't give me an
opportunity to setup. They
really come at you."
NEBRASKA'S DEFENSE,
in limiting Kansas to minus 42
yards rushing, established a
new school TecoTd. The old
record was minus U yards
against South Dakota.
Gce, thafs embarrassing,''''
concluded Jaynes. "1 don't
care if you're a sophomore, a
junior or a senior. It hurts to
lose. And it makes i t
embarrassing when the core ts
55-0."
Nebrpska's Black Shirts
turned an 18 -year -old
sophomore's dream into an
unforgetable nightmare.
