. L, ' Stewart calls by Jim Johnson Former Nebraska basketball standout Marvin Stewart, who was placed on waivers Monday by the Philadelphia 76'ers, claims he wasn't given a fair chance to make the NBA team. "1 thought I did a good job when I got a chance to play," said Stewart, "but I didn't get too much playing time." Stewart, an All-Big Eight guard for Nebraska last year, said he explained his feelings to Philadelphia coach Jack Ramsay. "I TOLD HIM that 1 didn't get a fair chance to play," said Stewart, "but he didn't agree. He said all the rookies had an equal chance." The 76'ers kept rookie guard Dave Wohl from Pennsylvania instead of Stewart, who was their No. 2 KU finds Kansas football coach Don Fambrough must be wearing a big smile this week. He's finally giving Nebraska head coach Bob Devaney a little of his own medicine. Fambrough, who is in his first year as the Jayhawks' head coach, was an assistant at Kansas for 23 years and worked primarily with the linebackers. For the past two seasons, Fambrough hasn't known how to prepare his linebackers for the Nebraska game because he didn't know who the starting quarterback would be. . . Jerry Tagge or Van Brownson. But this year it's Devaney who is wondering about Kansas' starting quarterback. Sophomore quarterback David Jaynes replaced veteran Dan Heck in. Saturday's game Rater's nightmare shatters Monday night in intramural flag football action was one of those nights commonly referred to as a rater's nightmare. All five of the fraternity A division teams saw action Monday evening, and when the dust had settled on Vine Street fields, four of them had lost. The big upset victim was top-ranked Phi Delta Theta, last year's fraternity division champs who have led this year's ratings from the beginning of the season. The Phi Delts fell to unrated Beta Theta Pi, 32-28. The third-ranked Ag Men lost to Phi Kappa Psi, 31-27, fourth ranked Sigma Alpha Epsilon lost to second ranked Phi Gamma Delta, 40-6, and fifth ranked Delta Upsilon fell to Sigma Chi, 20-13. The Phi Delt loss to the Betas left those two teams and Phi Gamma Delta (Fiji) in a three-way tie for the leadership of league No. 1 . isitrciiniiraSs Wednesday, October 13 5:00-V1, Gui III vt. Philadelphia also has veteran guards Hal Greer, Archie Clark and Wally Jones. Jones, however, has been placed on new quarterback against Kansas State and directed the Jayhawks to a 39-13 win. Jaynes came off the bench to start the second quarter of the scoreless game. He proceeded to throw three touchdown passes and direct Kansas to a 33-7 lead before leaving the game early in the fourth quarter. In little more than two quarters, Jaynes hit 12 or 18 passes for 163 yards. "Jaynes did a tremendous job for a sophomore," said Devaney after watching films of the game. "He gives Kansas a different type of attack. He isn't as good of a runner as Heck, but he gives their offense more balance because of his passing." Devaney, however, doesn't know which quarterback will start. "They were hot and we had an off night," Phi Delt team member Mike Peetz said, explaining their loss to the Betas. "They're a good team and they capitalized on our mistakes, but we wouldn't lose to them again." "It really shocked me when they told me I was being placed on waivers," said Stewart. "I'm better than Wohl. I just didn't get a fair chance." STEWART, IN A telephone conversation from his Philadelphia apartment Tuesday, said he will now play, for Hartford in the Eastern League if he isn't claimed by another team. The 7ft'ers could not cut Stewart because his contract read that he must be paid even if he doesn't make the team. "I haven't been contacted by another team and I don't think I will be," said Stewart. "1 guess I'll just have to keep trying. They can't keep a good man down." "They may go with Heck or they might even alternate the two," observed Devaney. "Jaynes definitely adds another dimension to the Kansas offense and he creates some different problems." Kansas, which now sports a 3-2 record, had the services of running back Vince O'Neil for the first time last Saturday. O'Neil, who had to miss the first four games because of his involvement in the Kansas recruiting violation last year, gained 43 yards on only six carries. O'Neil returned a kickoff for a touchdown against Nebraska last year. Nebraska offensive tackle Carl White, who was injured in the Missouri game, missed Tuesday's practice but is expected to be ready for Saturday's game with Kansas. standings Bennett was optimistic about his team's chances for the play-offs after their convincing win over Sigma Alpha Epsilon. "Everything worked real well," Bennett said about Monday night's victory. "Things just started clicking and once they started, they didn't stop." He started in a game against Atlanta, but played only the first quarter. "They said my play was too stagnant," explained Marv. "They said I was too used to Nebraska's type' of offense where I shot off the pick. "THEY WANT ME to get more one-on-one conscious because in pro basketball you don't always have a set pattern to run. It's usually you against another individual. I guess they want me to get more selfish." Stewart, however, said he is not bitter at the Philadelphia organization. "I'll be back," said Marvin. "I think they sent me to the astern League so I'll have an opportunity to play more so I can improve. That's why I'm not all that mad. I'll be back on the team before the season's over."
