Mid -October finds Homecoming events occuring at the
University of Nebraska, both up at UNO and here at UNL. On
Friday, Oct. 8, at 8 p.m. UNO will feature George Carlin, the
comedian who made Hal Sleet, the hippie-dippie weatherman
famous with such lines as "Hey man que pasa?"
Appearing with Carlin will be two rock groups, the Joy of
Cooking and Sons of Champlin. The show will be at the Civic
Auditorium Music Hall with tickets costing $2.50 at the door.
HOMECOMING activities for the Lincoln campus will be a
week later on Friday, Oct. 15, at 8:30 p.m. in the Coliseum.
Featuring singer-songwriter Jimmy Webb and heavy, tough
bluesoriented Crow, tickets will sell for $3 in advance and for
$3.50 at the door.
Webb has penned such songs as "Up, Up and Away," "By the
Time I Get to Phoenix," "Wichita Lineman" and MacArthur
Park," and has recorded an album--WW.r and Music.
Their first hit, "Evil Woman," is now disowned by Crow.
"Don't listen to our first album. It's terrible. We're into
something much better now," says Dick Wiegand, Crow's lead
guitarist, refering to their second album, Crow by Crow.
The University of Nebraska Howell Memorial Theatre will be
opening their season this year with The Balcony by Jean Genet
and directed by Dr. William Morgan on Oct. 29 and running
through Nov. 6 (except on Sunday).
THE PLAY TAKES place in a brothel, where diverse and
unusual clientsstruggling with their inability to control their
destiniessubstitute images and illusions for the elusive realities
of the modern world.
Curtain time is 8 p.m. with tickets costing $2 for general
admission and $1 .50 for students on Monday through Thursdays,
and $2.50 for general admission and $2 for students on Fridays
and Saturdays. Tickets for the The Balcony will go on sale on
Monday, Oct. 1 1 , at the theatre box office.
The rest of the season for Howell theatre will be Child's Play
by Robert Marasco and directed by Dr. Hal Floyd, performing
March 10 through March 18, and The Tempest by William
Shakespeare and directed by Dr. William Morgan, performing May
5 through May 18.
IN ADDITION Howell Theatre will sponsor an enchanting
fantasy for the entire family, A Touch of Magic, written and
directed by NU Graduate student, Royal Eckert, for the Holiday
Season-running Dec. 15 through Dec. 18.
Howell Theatre uses NU students as actors and technicians for
their plays and functions primarily for the University population.
It would be nice if said population would realize this, and
patronize "their" theatre more.
FANNY is no longer appearing on Friday, Oct. 8, INSTEAD
the concert has been changed to Saturday, Oct. 9. Otherwise, all
the other facts are still the same: Nebraska Union8:30 p.m.
