"They're improving," noted Devaney Wednesday, "but stopping a team once they're inside the 10 or five yard line is more than just knowing what they're going to do. "It's an attitude and frame of mind situation," explained Devaney. "It has a lot to do with developing pride in yourself. Once a defense stops iLiiiinii t-f. . . ..:.:iMaaiMMM ta ill W2s 5 A ANHEUSER-BUSCH, INC. ST. LOUIS a team in a goal line situation, the defense develops pride in itself and naturally becomes tougher." The Cornhuskers otten make changes in their defensive line under goal line situations. John Dutton (6-7, 241) will sometimes replace Bill Janssen at tackle and Monte Johnson (6-6, 232) may replace Rich Glover at middle guard. That same duo often go into the game during certain passing situations because of their height advantage. Devaney said the defensive team has to gamble during goal line situations. "You have to decide if the offense will try for the short yardage up the middle or go all out on a pass," said Devaney. "If you're playing your defense too tight, you can get hurt badly by the pass." There's a lot to take into consideration if you go into an all-out goal line defense." The Cornhuskers cut practice short Wednesday TU Gmt tnolf t he called BUDWHSER because of the heat. I-back Jeff Kinney and cornerback Joe Blahak, who have been ill this week, were both suited up for Wednesday's drills. Blahak had a light case of flu and Kinney was undergoing tests at the hospital after he didn't completely recover from the flu two weeks ago. It was learned Wednesday that Kinney may have a slight case of food poisioning. Fullback Maury Damkroger has also been slowed with illness, but should be ready for Saturday. Devaney was confident that the Huskers should be healthy for Saturday's date with Utah State. There shouldn't be any changes in the Huskers lineup this week. Center Doug Dumler has completely recovered from a foot injury and Jim Branch will still start at linebacker. Branch replaced Bill Sloey who injured his knee against Oregon. l!inV rlnvl Tfcnff?fwl i PAGE 8 THE DAILY NEBRASKAN THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 30. 1971
