Co-op by Marsha Kahm There may be a way for students who buy their own food to save up to 50 per cent in food prices if the People's Food Co-op receives the interest and cooperation it needs from the community. In the initial stages still, the main goal of the co-op is to bring people together to buy food and save money, according to Dennis Berkheim, an organizer. THE CO-OP WOULD be able to accomplish this goal mainly by eliminating the middleman. That means people involved would deal directly with wholesalers and farmers to buy the food and then distribute it directly to persons in the co-op. 2 p.m. Nebraska Union-Dean Meyerson, Student Affairs. 3:30 p.m. Nebraska Union-Phi Chi Theta Pledging. 3:30 p.m. Nebraska Union-Builders Tours. 3:30 p.m. Nebraska Union-U.P.C. He said the more complicated jobs, such as treasurer and bookkeeper would probably be passed around on a monthly basis. A 1 1 h o ugh the final organization of the co-op will be "up to the people" it is being modeled somewhat after a co-op which exists in Venice, California which saves its members around 50 per cent of food costs. "It won'r he t.'u i.dvri frustration dictating to the people but the people organizing everything themselves." A Lincoln lawyer who works for the Lincoln Legal Service is checking into all the legal aspects of the co-op to eliminate any future problems. All the other facets of the co-op, such as a food distribution center and contacts with food sources are being looked into, Berkheim said. FOR THE TIME being meetings are being held on Monday nights at the Lincoln Free School, 700 N. 27th Street. Berkheim says at the two meetings that have been held already a lot of "fantastic" ideas have been offered. He estimates there are around 150 interested people so far. r OO lit? However, he said his prime goal is to make it a community project. Considering: this as a springboard toward other community programs, Berkheim hopes that other issues can be brought up among the members. He threw out such things as health care, shelter and, if need be, University expansion into the community. "WE ALWAYS WANT to maintain the co-op as a group of individuals getting together to buy food," emphasized Berkheim. "There is no way that it could operate commercially for profit." Bart Becker, a UNL student who has attended a meeting, said one of the ideas thrown out was to have people put in their orders. On a certain day a week later everyone would pick up their food. Becker estimated the co-op should be able to start operating within two weeks. "Everyone interested should try to get to the next meeting so everything can get moving." A FUND MAY BE established, according to Becker, by having everyone pay an initial fee to join which entitles him to obtain food through the co-op. At the next meeting Monday, there will be a speaker from a wholesale house to speak and a report on the legal aspects of the coop.
