- - I injuries, illness plague rausker a an i is by Jim Johnston Linebacker Bill Sloey was placed on coach Bob Devaney's "out for an indefinite- time" list while I-back Jeff Kinney and defensive back Joe Blahak have been slowed this week with illness. , . . Sloey, who injured his knee in the Oregon game, was re-injured against Texas A & M and may be sidelined for several weeks. KINNEY MISSED Monday's workouts and was in sweat clothes Tuesday after undergoing several tests at the hospital. "Kinney hasn't been feeling good and he's losing weight,' explained Devaney. "We hope nothing is seriously wrong, but we're taking every precautionary measure." Blahak missed Tuesday's drills with the flu. The junior cornerback is expected to be ready for Saturday's game with Utah State, however. Senior Cfary Uollestein backs up Blahak. Nebraska tightened its grips on the No. 1 position in both the Associated Press and United Press International polls. THE CORNHUSKERS, following Notre Dame's narrow 8-7 win over Purdue, claimed 44 of 55 first-place votes in the AP poll and 33 of the 35 UPI first-place votes. Nebraska leads second place Michigan by 224 points. Colorado jumped to the No. 6 spot and Oklahoma advanced to eighth to place three Big Fight teams in the Top Ten. The Cornhuskers turn their thoughts to their final non-conference foe before opening Big Eight play at Missouri. Oct. 9. ..... UTAH STATE which owns a 3-0 record, invades Memorial Stadium at 1 :30 p.m. Saturday. "I know I'll have a tough time convincing people in Nebraska," said Nebraska assistant coach Jim Ross, "but Utah State has a fine football team. It's tough to hand that first loss on 2i tCdlTl ROSS. WHO SCOUTED the Aggies' win over University of Nevada-Las Vegas Saturday, said "People in this part of the country tend to think that temas such as Utah State and New Mexico State aren't good football teams, but that's not so." Utah State is led by quarterback Tony Adams, who was named national back of the week by the AP and UPI following a win over Kentucky last year. "You'd have to classify Adams as a running quarterback, said Devaney. "He can roll out and he also runs the option extremely well." But Adams is also a passer. And his favorite target is split end Bob Wicks who is being mentioned as an All-American candidate. THERE WERE NO changes in the Cornhuskers' starting lineup, but Devaney noted that Rich Sanger is threatening Jeff Hughes for the top punting position. Sanger, who handles the place kicking chores, demonstrated his punting abilities against Texas A & M and has a 39.8 average after four kicks. City rolls out Bike Week Oct. 3-10 Bike Week, a city-wide event sponsored by the University Recreation and Intramurals Department in conjunction with City Recreation Department, will begin Sunday, Oct. 3 and continue through the following Sunday. "The purpose of Bike Week is to provide a chance to bring together bicycle enthusiasts," University Recreation Department chairman Kermit McMurrary said. "It is hoped it will make them cognizant of rules relating to their bikes and also provide a chance to register their bikes." The week will begin Sunday with a bike race at the East campus tractor testing site starting at 1 p.m. The main event will be pace-lapped by Lincoln mayor Sam Schwartzkopf and City Councilwoman Helen Boosalis. There is a 25 cent entry fee for the Sunday race to defray the cost of trophies and insurance, PAGE 8 according to McMurray. Registration and inspection of university bikes will be held Wednesday, October 6, from 1:30-6 p.m. at the main campus mall. McMurray explained that this would provide an opportunity for all new bikes to be registered with both city and campus police. A bicycle clinic, covering maintenance and essential repair methods will be held between 7 and 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Henzlik Hall Auditorium. Saturday, October 9 will feature a cross-country bike tour starting at 9 a.m. and traveling from the Governor's mansion in Lincoln to Roca. For the closing activities of Bike Week, a bike tour will be held Sunday, October 10, from the Governor's mansion to Pioneer Park, followed by a series of races at the park. The road race begins at 9:30 Sunday morning. ejsejqavj 'upoun 9ns "S 008 OQ '4-SIQ jaA3a-jeABQ jaaq jo ;no 3jtnoX 'zjjiqas jo jno ayiOiC U3q .:rf t CM " m $Tv A h - Linebacker Bill Sloey.. .injured in Oregon game is out for injury. intramurals Wednesday 5 00-V1, Glenn vs. Rogers; V2, Delta Sigma Phi A vs. Ag Men A; V3, Brown Palace A vs. Phi Kappa Psi A; V4, Beta Sigma Psi A. vs. Cornhusker Coop; VV1, Delta Sigma Pi A vs. Alpha Gamma Sigma A; W2, Delta Tau Delta A vs. Alpha Gamma Rho A; W3, Sigma Nu A vs. Pi Kappa Alpha A; 6:30-V1, Kappa Sigma A vs. Beta Theta Pi A; V2, Phi Gamma Delta A vs. Phi Delta Theta A; V3, Alpha ahoursaday tr,.,, r I Tdaysa week finerf frOkTHE LOST V HALU& n3 PRINCE Iv rh, $ Young jennedy b tg&g Xirt a nk Sea rhTS i THE DAILY NEBRASKAN f I J C ' Tau Omega A vs. Sigma Alpha Epsilon A; V4, Aurgi vs. Know Buddies 7:30 VI, Sigma Alpha Mu A vs. Theta Chi A; V2, Tau Kappa Epsilon A vs. Acacia A; V3, Benton Hall vs. Fagowies 8:30-VI.
