'A JUDGE HAS the responsibility to know about things and inform the public, Thomsen said. "But he has to be careful that the public doesn't lose confidence in his objectivity." In his inaugural address to the Maryland Bar Association in June, Thomsen outlined the duties of a special committee instituted in that state to study correction reform. A subcommittee was set up by the committee to examine present legal restrictions on Un employment of persons who have been convicted of various crimes. The subcommittee will work for the removal of unneccesary and inappropriate legal barriers. "There are 800,000 men on probation and parole in this country, twice as many as are actually in prison," Thomsen said. "But these 800,000 are serviced by one-tilth ot the total correctional personnel. "As a consequence, caseloads of a 100 or more per probation officer are commonplace. That is far more than a probation officer can effectively handle." THE SUBCOMMITTEE, in conjunction with the Maryland Young Lawyers and the Junior Bar Association of Baltimore City, issued a request tor volunteer lawyers. After a period of training, the lawyers will serve as part-time parole or probation officers under the direction of professionals. A third subcommittee was set up in Maryland to promote the education and training of correctional officers. The job of the overall committee is to operate with and supplement the work of the State's Crime Commission, inquire into the adequacy of vocational programs, medical facilities and educational opportunities in our prisons, and recommend improvements where necessary. THOMSEN NOTED that grievances against guards was one of the primary causes cited for the recent riots in Attica State Prison in New York. " Thomsen said Maryland is trying an inmate grievance commission to hear prisoner's complaints. He said the governor-appointed committee could alleviate some of the problems which lead to prison disturbances. SDX hosts professionals A panel of five well-known Nebraska journalists will be featured at a special meeting Wednesday evening of the University of Nebraska undergraduate chapter of Sigma Delta Chi, professional journalism society.
