Huskers aid Minnesota The Minnesota Gophers haven't had any recent football success against Nebraska, losing six straight since Bob Devaney arrived, but the school's athletic department is always happy after the Minnesota-Nebraska games, regardless of the score. The reason is money. The University of Minnesota, which has lost popularity in the Twin Cities area since the arrival of professional sports, has always welcomed Nebraska because of the large crowds the game attracts. Last year at Minnesota, for example, the Minnesota Twins and the Baltimore Orioles were meeting in the first game of the American League Western Division playoffs at the same time the Cornhuskers were playing the Gophers. But the Nebraska-Minnesota game doubled the attendance of the baseball game. Both were in Minneapolis. But that is the exception rather than the rule for the University's sports following. The Minnesota Vikings (football), North Stars (hockey) and Twins have taken away much of the interest from the University of Minnesota sports. In 1948, for example, the Gophers home attendance averaged 62,000 each game. Last year Minnesota averaged only 45,000 fans each game. The decline in interest has also produced a decline in the caliber of Minnesota football. It's hard to believe that Minnesota won the national championship in 1960...just 1 1 years ago. There was, a few years back, strong feeling against Gopher head coach Murray Warmath who is now in his 1 8th year with the Gophers. The public was disgusted with Minnesota's boring brand of football. But the pressure has recently been taken off Warmath. The Twin Cities area just doesn't seem to care about the University anymore. Only 28,500 fans watched the Gophers opener last week. Minnesota, once a great football power, is now considered a patsy on most football schedules. Jottings: Nebraska's second team I-back Gary Dixon, who scored three touchdowns against Oregon, leads the Big Eight scoring charts with 1 8 points Oklahoma State's Dick Graham is off to another fast start. Graham caught five passes for 1 40 yards against Mississippi State. Nebraska, rated No. 1 by both wire service polls, takes a 20-game unbeaten string into Saturday's game. Minnesota holds a 29-12-2 lead in the football series with the Cornhuskers. Cornhusker quarterback Jerry Tagge leads the Big Eight in passing percentage after the first week. Tagge hit eight of 10 passes for 80 per cent accuracy. So they say: BOB SEAMAN, Wichita State football coach: 'Texas A & M (which beat Wichita) has a fine football team. When they beat Nebraska I'll feel much better about our loss." JOHNNY MAJORS Iowa State football coach: "Our quarterback Dean Carlson could be the best quarterback in the nation. ..as good as Jim Plunkett was last year." Migration tickets scarce The University of Nebraska athletic department, assuming that the game against Missouri will be the informal student migration, has set a date for students to purchase tickets for the game at Columbia. In accordance with an agreement reached with the ASUN a number of years ago, 20 per cent of the allotted tickets for the game will be held for the students. The University of Missouri has allowed Nebraska 3,000 tickets. This means that there will be only 600 tickets available for Nebraska students. Allocation of the tickets to the students will be handled by a lottery. Those students desiring tickets to the game are asked to come to the Coliseum ticket office on September 20, 21 or 22 and leave their order. No checks or cash will be required at this time. Students desiring to sit together (not to exceed six in a group) must come to the office together. At the time an order is placed, that student will draw a lottery number. Winning lottery numbers will be announced in the Daily Nebraskan next Friday, Sept 24 and the students must pick up their tickets and pay for them at the Coliseum by Sept. 27 or 28. Married students may request two tickets upon establishment of proof of marriage. x Husker offensive line. . . leads the way f f tet? m FROM ARBY'S ROGUE'S BEEF GALLERY 14thQ Two Arby's to go, please mm, 12 Pok Pebst Blue Ribbon Warm $2 14 Early Times q" $475 Boone's Strawberry Fifth Try to Beat These GO BIG RED Beat Minnesota Prices Soo4 Thru Sept. 22 Glenmore St. Whiskey Full $475 wt.
