Husker, Nebraska Duck rosters V? If mm Sports Illustrated, not known for complementing Bob Devaney's appearance or dress code, has done it again. The national publication used such phrases as "that unpretentious, unassuming man, that broad pleasant potato face, that dumpy baker's build" in describing the Cornhusker football coach in this week's edition. Devaney, although smiling about the six-page article on Nebraska football, still offered some words for Sports Illustrated. "They can't ever do a completely nice job," said Devaney. "What's a dumpy baker's build? Why couldn't they tell the truth and say I was built like an Olympic weightlifter? Or why couldn't they describe me as a thin, studious type gentleman like I really am. Wonder if Bob Devaney ever considered being a baker. With those credentials, how could he miss being a success? How NU's foes will fare NEBRASKA 34, Oregon 21.. .Bob Devaney's philosophy is correct: if people say you can't hold Oregon under three touchdowns, then Nebraska will just have to score four touchdowns. Would you believe five? MINNESOTA 28, Indiana 14. . .Gopher quarterback Craig Curry says Minnesota might even with the Big Ten championship. Well, Craig, at least the Golden Gophers will win a Big Ten game. TEXAS A & M 42, Wichita State 10. . .Aggie quarterback Lex James' passing will help improve a dismal 2-9 record in 1970. KANSAS STATE 31, Utah State 14. . .If Kansas has enough girl talent to be featured in September's centerfold in Playboy, there is surely enough football talent to get past Utah State. STANFORD 28, Missouri 7. . .They say that new Stanford quarterback Don Bunce is a better option quarterback than Jim Plunkett was. KANSAS 38, Washington State 14. . .Several teams will have easy Saturdays against Washington State-including the Jayhawks. MISSISSIPPI STATE 21, Oklahoma State 10. . .Missippi State is no longer the donkey of the Southeastern Conference, but the Cowboys will hold the title in the Big Eight this year. LSU 21, iColorado 17. . .Few teams visit Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge and- come home winners- the Buffs will be no exception. Jottings: Saturday's game at Memorial Stadium will have some historical significance. It was back in 1953, the last time Nebraska and Oregon met in football, that the Ducks and Cornhuskers played the first televised collegiate football game. Nebraska and Oregon have met just twice. . .with the two teams splitting. The Cornhuskers stopped Oregon, 28-1 3, in 1952 and Oregon claimed a 20-12 win in 1953. Three West Coast junior college transfers will open in the Nebraska offensive line-guards Dick Rupert and Keith Wortman and tackle Carl Johnson. Bill Sloey, another West Coast JC transfer, will be starting at linebacker. Nebraska captains Jerry Tagge (offense) and Jim Anderson (defence) were also teammates at Green Bay West High School. Tagge bumped Anderson for the starting quarterback job in high school. Another Green Bay West High graduate, Dave Mason, will be the Huskers' starter at monster Saturday. Some 67,000 fans, including 1,500 from Oregon, are expected to jam Memorial Stadium for the 1971 opener. It will mark the 18th straight sell-out basis for 22 straight games dating back to 1967, but a Thanksgiving Day TV crowd of 59,792 mars the string. So they say: JERRY FREI, Oregon head football coach: "It's obvious to us from our films and reports that Nebraska was the No. 1 team in the country last year. We respect them for what they have been and what they are now. But we feel we are also coming into the game with a good football team and this could give us a chance to prove just how good we are."
