    'aseballers drop three in row
Women's P.E. announces summer hours
by JIM JOHNSTON
Sports Editor
Major League baseball is a grinding
sport. Teams struggle from April to
October through a 162- game
schedule. Losing three straight is no
reason for a manager to get alarmed.
Not so in college baseball. Losing
three straight games, at least in the Big
Eight, is losing one-seventh of your
conference schedule.
THE CORNHUSKERS lost
one-seventh of their conference
schedule at Norman, Okla., last
weekend. Nebraska, which had just
won its first two series of the season i
before playing Oklahoma, dropped
three straight to the Sooners.
"It was just one of those weekends
you expect to have in baseball," said
Nebraska head coach Tony Sharpe(
"Since the schedule is short ycu hope
to go through the season without one
of those weekends, but it's pretty
tough to do."
The Cornhuskers ran into a
surprisingly consistent Oklahoma
pitching staff and came home scoring just
two runs in three games.
"THEIR PITCHING had something
to do with our lack of hitting," said
Sharpe. "They had without question
the three best pitchers we've seen all
season."
The three straight losses
dropped Nebraska to sixth place in the
Big Eight with a 6-9 record. Oklahoma
and Iowa State share the conference
lead with 10-5 marks.
So what's left for Nebraska besides
two more series?
"I GUESS WE'LL just shoot to win
as many as we can," said Sharpe. "It's
still mathematically possible for us to
finish second or last. We're just going
after the highest finish."
The Cornhuskers will begin their
comeback efforts Friday against
Missouri at the NU diamond. Sharpe
isn't sure who will be pitching yet and
doesn't plan any changes in the
remaining lineup.
Lincoln freshman Jim Smith, who
had been playing shortstop, was
injured in Saturday's game and will
not see action this weekend. Smith
will be replaced in the lineup by Peter
Bethell, a 6-8 infielder from the
Bahamas.
"PETER HAS HAD a sore arm this
season, but I think it's coming along
better now," said Sharpe. "That's
probably the only change we'll have in
the lineup."
Sharpe, who saw Iowa State as the
pre-season favorite, still thinks the
Cyclones have the inside track to the
title. Oklahoma and ISU square off in
a three-game series at Ames, Iowa, this
weekend.
