Cornhuskers siffix gridders ,, , , l -. is,:...- . t8a.nn iiiiim t- - c 1 Oil m Humm. . . will be pressured by the No. 1 defense again Saturday. Nebraska signed 1 7 more high school football players and one junior collegian to national letters of intent to attend the University Wednesday. The Metropolitan Conference in Omaha and the California prep ranks tied for the most men as each provided four gridders. Line help for the future should come from Omaha standouts Archie Gray of Benson, George Mills from Bishop Ryan, Central's Jerry Lloyd and Creighton Prep's Tim McGuire. Mills, Lloyd and McGuire all weigh 225 or above while Gray tips the scales at 190. Frank Mazon, Larry Mushinskie. Dana Potter, and Jim Miller will all leave the West coast for Nebraska next year. Mazon was the freeway player of the year playing for Anaheim last season, an honor earned the year before by present Cornhusker Glen Garson. Another back, Mushinskie was player of the year in California's AA division. He will play in California's North-South Shrine game along with quarterback Potter. The 5-1 1 Potter threw for more than 3,000 yards last year while being named co-player of the year in the Los Angeles City League. The 6-3, 230 pound Miller from Costa Mesa is the son of Jake Miller, a former coach in the Nebraska high school ranks. Harbor Junior College provided Nebraska with Bob Thorton, a 6-3, 180 pounder who was named all-league at both receiver and defensive back last year. He will join ex-teammate Dick Rupert with the Cornhuskers. Burton Burns from St. Augustine High School in New Orleans, a 5-11, 210 pounder also signed with the Huskers Wednesday. Burns had been under pressure from Louisiana governor John McKiethen to stay in Louisiana to play for Louisiana State University. Intrasquad game climaxes spring practice by JIM JOHNSTON Sports Editor The residents of Schramm IV can't decide which team to cheer for in Nebraska's spring intrasquad game at 1 :30 p.m. Saturday. Starting quarterbacks Jerry Tagge and David Humm, both residents of Schramm IV, will be on opposite sides. Perhaps the floor cheering section could back both offensive units. . . hoping Tagge and Humm both have good days in directing the offense. But there's a problem about that solution. Corncrback Jim Anderson and monster man Dave Mason will be starting for the No. I defensive unit to oppose Humm. And you guessed it. They both live on Schramm IV. An even more delicate situation will be taking place when Taggc's No. 1 offensive unit is on the field. Pat MoreH, who rooms with Tagge, will be starting at linebacker to oppose Tagge's unit. The Schramm IV football fans, all things considered, will probably have to watch on a neutral basis. The cards are stacked in favor of the Red team which includes the No. 1 offensive and defensive units. Tagge, who directed Nebraska to an Orange Bowl win and received MVP honors for his effort, will quarterback 9 veteran backiield which includes All Big Eight wingback Johnny Rodgcrs and two-year I-back leader Jeff Kinney. Bill Olds and Jim Carstens, who have beea battling all spring for a starting role, will alternate aft faack with the FRIDAY, MAY 7, 1971 first team. Redshirt Dave Goeller will join Kinney at I-back. Tagge has an abundance of receiving talent to work with. Joining Rodgers in the receiving department will be split end Woody Cox. Cox alternated with all-time receiving leader Guy Ingles last season. While Humm will also be working with some talented receivers, the lefthanded sophomore may find passing a more difficult task. Neither offensive line has been able to contain the defense this season. And Humm's White team will be working against the rugged No. 1 defensive line. That defensive line is led by two-year letterman Larry Jacobson at tackle and junior right end Willie Harper. Monte Johnson, who worked at middle guard most of the spring will start at the other tackle spot and Rich Glover will start at middle guard. John Hyland stepped into the No. 1 left defensive end position this week and will remain there for Saturday's intrasquad game. Starting for the Red team at linebacker will be Bill Sloey, Jim Branch and veteran Bob Terrio. Joining Anderson in the all-veteran defensive secondary will be Joe Blahak and safety Bill Kosch. Humm's offensive backficld lacks much of the veteran touch, but an impressive crop of newcomers will be trying to prove their ability against the No. 1 defense. Randy Butts, who has had an outstanding spring, will join junior college transfer Gary Dixon at I-back. Lincoln sophomore Maury Damkroger and redshirt Ralph Powell will be at fullback. Two-year letterman Jeff Hughes will get the nod at wingback and sophomore Jeff Hill will provide depth at that position. Frosty Anderson and Max Linder will be working with Humm's unit at splitend. Student spring all-sports tickets will not be honored for the spring game. Admission price is two dollars.
