Stohs Diamond men look toward Big 8 win by WARREN OBR Sports Writer "If any team gets hot, they can win the conference." That, according to assistant baseball coach Phil Krause, is the situation in the Big-8. And with only three games separating the top seven teams in the conference, it seems to be an accurate statement. "We're definitely in the race. And if we can sweep our next two three-game series, we'll be in excellent position," said Krause. "Our pitching will have to stay healthy, though. But if our pitching is healthy, we can certainly compete with anybody." PITCHING HELP could come from Gene Stohs, who returned to the Nebraska line-up last weekend after being out with a broken finger since the April 9 series with Colorado. Stohs, who hit .310 last season, has been a two-year starting pitcher for the Huskers. "We get a tremendous contribution from a ballplayer of his caliber," Krause said. "If he's able to pitch, we'd like to have him in there. But I'm not sure his interest lies there." And the Grand Island native agrees. "If I had to pitch, I could. But I prefer to play the outfield. I think the pro scouts may be looking at me as an outfielder so that I could play every day." BUT THAT is the dilemna of coaching. "The coaches would like to have him do both, but for the ballplayer, it's easier if he plays only one position," explained Krause. "If Gene doesn't have to prepare to pitch, it relieves a lot of mental strain on him. He can concentrate on the outfield and do a better job there." This should be the last season at Nebraska for Stohs who will be eligible for the pro baseball draft next January. "If 1 get a good offer, I'll probably sign," said the 21 -year-old pre-med major. "Right now I'd like to play baseball and maybe go to med-school later." SIGNING THIS winter, before he's any older, would be in Stohs' favor because baseball teams take time to develop players in their farm systems, but the "offer will have to be good, or I won't waste my time," according to Stohs. Another must for the Huskers if they are to win the conference is the continuation of the pitching Ryan Kurosaki has done this season. "With Ryan on the mound, you know you have a good chance of winning," Krause said. "And this confidence can carry over into other games. When we have a double header and Ryan is going to pitch one game, then we spend more time worrying about the other game." Kurosaki carries a 4-1 record into this weekend's Oklahoma series with an ERA that dipped below 1.00 with his shutout against Oklahoma State last weekend. cans wJjjjb See LINCOLN'S FA VORITE!!!
