Country Joe broke away with an album of his own devoted to Woodie Guthrie songs. He demonstrated that he could aptly handle folk material. His second album was in the same vein. In this third album, Country Joe has turned to material of the current James Taylor style. While it does lay down some good music on the way, Hold On It's Coming has some flaws that keep it from getting totally off the ground. The most irritating thing the University Singers and University Orchestra in Poulenc's Gloria. Shaw gained international fame as the director of the Robert Shaw Choral. In two songs, "Air Algiers" and "Playing With Fire," Country Joe appears to be playing with "relevancy" and missing the point, v "Air Algiers" is little more than the exploitation of a headline, the story of Eldridge Cleaver's exile, yet pointless. "Playing With Fire" deals with bombers, acid-heads and dealers. The message is don't be one. Thanks for the helpful advice, Joe. And in "Traveling," the beauty of the music is marred by June-moon type rhymes. But the music is generally nice, especially that on "Traveling." "Joe's Blues" is a good Performing Arts in Nebraska." NU President Joseph Soshnik will preside. Other major events on the 4-day program are: --A concert by internationally renowned United States pianist Eugene Istomin at 8 p.m., Friday, May 7. --A talk by opera commentator Boris Goldovsky followed by a performance of The Old Maid and The Thief by University Opera classes, conducted by Prof. Richard Grace and Prof. John Zei, 8 p.m. Saturday, May 8. -A chamber music concert by the Chicago Symphony String Quartet, 3 p.m., Sunday May 9. -Dedication of the Miskell Memorial Pipe Organ and a dedication concert by Robert Baker, concert organist and dean of the School of Sacred Music at New York's Union Theological Seminary, 8 p.m., Sunday, May 9. There is also a lack of enthusiasm and feeling here, that seems to dominate most of the album. The album only begins to catch fire with "Hold On It's Coming", yet even the enthusiasm and good music here don't justify its use at both the beginning and the end of the album. If you are a Country Joe freak, you'll find enough here to really like this album. But otherwise, there isn't a lot here to make it particularly distinguishable from the flock of soft-rock albums folding the scene today.
