Crew. . .Novice oarsmen sometimes run into problems. In their first rowing
practice, Nebraska's crew sometimes ran into poles.

If an opposing crew team
had witnessed Nebraska's first
test in the water, it would have
felt overconfident. One
member of the Nebraska team
fell in the water and the
Nebraska shell hit a post
shortly after the rowing had
started.
Coach Bill Brush, a junior
with previous rowing
experience, scratched his head
in disbelief while yelling
instructions.

And the first Nebraska crew
team in the University's history
will make its debut Sunday at
Branched Oak Lake near
Malcolm. Washburn of Kansas,
a school with also limited
experience, will be the
opponent.
Two races will be held,
starting at 2 p.m. It is about a
20 minute drive to Branched
Oak Lake' from the Lincoln
campus. A suggested route is to
follow 10th Street north which
leads into Highway 34. Signs

Each race will be 2,000
meters which is approximately
1 Va miles.
Nebraska's rowing ream has
University sanction and
support, but is not funded by
the school. A constitution was
written and accepted by the
University of Nebraska Student
Activities Office.
Coach Brush is optimistic
about his team's first taste of
competition Sunday.
"I look for a win this
Sunday," said Brush.
"Washburn is in about the
same situation as we are and I
think we have a good chance of
winning."
Nebra ska's team is
inexperienced. But that's the
idea. The team has 26 members
which are all sophomores and
freshmen.
Weed science
research lab
to be dedicated
The new weed science
facility operated by the
Agronomy Department will be
dedicated Friday at 2:30 p.m.
The new facility makes it
possible to conduct research on
a 12 month basis to help solve
some of the practical weed
control problems encountered
across the state.
Dedicatory remarks will be
made by President Joseph
Soshnik.
Principal speaker at the
program will be former
agronomy department staff
member Dayton L. Klingman
now involved in weed
investigations for grazing lands,
U.S. Department of
Agriculture, in Maryland.
