Backfield has talent, but by JIM JOHNSTON Sports Editor Nebraska offensive backfield coach Mike Corgan is optimistic, but he's also realistic. "We've got some good candidates at I-back," said Corgan in reference to finding a partner for veteran I-back Jeff Kinney. "But 1 can't say that I've seen anyone to join Kinney as good as Joe Orduna." Ft J- - Butts Orduna, the rushing leader in the Bob Devaney era, teamed with Kinney last year and the two rushed for more than 1,500 yards. It was an explosive situation. And the Nebraska coaching staff took a liking to the two-man system at I-back. "YOU DONT HAVE toworry about getting your I-back tired," explained Corgan. "If Kinney would go out for a long pass we would come back with Orduna on the next play, it didn't give the opposition an opportunity to relax on the I-back because he was tired after a long run." So Nebraska's coaching staff set out to find another I-back to replace the graduated Orduna. They recruited Gary Dixon from Ventura Junior College and were also counting on red shirt Randy Butts and sophomore-to-be Don Westbrook. Then along came Dave Goeller. Who? Goeller was a walk on his freshman season in 1969 before being redshirted last season. He's a native of Pilger, a town known better for its cattle feeding than its athletes. But whatever they feed the cattle, Goeller must have gotten his share. The stocky sophomore is now Kinney's No. 1 running mate. BUTTS WAS the leading contender before Easter break and Westbrook, running with Goeller on the No. 2 unit, was sidelined for the remainder of spring with a dislocated elbow. "Both Butts and Goeller had looked good," said Corgan, "But it was just a case of Goeller looking a little better. We've been satisfied with all of them." Dixon is running with the No. 2 unit, but is having problems getting adjusted to the new formations. But, according to Corgan, it's only natural for a junior college transfer and it's nothing to get concerned about. Butts is the fastest of the leading contenders. The former Nebraska hurdler has been clocked at 4.5 in the 40 yard dash. "Randy (Butts) is an improved football player this season," said Corgan. "Other years while he was out for track he couldn't give his full concentration to football. But this year football is all he's working on and it's made a difference." Nebraska, missing one veteran quarterback along with two middle guards and a defensive tackle, will hold its first scrimmage in 12 days Wednesday. QUARTERBACK VAN Brownson has a dislocated left shoulder and will be out for the rest of the spring. Middle guards Bob Pabis and John Bell are also through for the spring with knee injuries and defensive tackle Dan Lynch has been sidelined with in Continued from page 4 SCHOOL OF FINE ARTS: Marchellu 406 Whined 311 JOURNALISM: Willers 478 Gray 433 The Home Economics Advisory Board candidates include: (one is elected from each division) FAMILY ECONOMICS AND MANAGEMENT: Geis v 3 Tinlev 3 FOOD AND NUTRITION: Brugman 10 Stefanie 8 Houser 7 Jav 5 HOME ECONOMICS EDUCATION: Sadie 2 5 Fie ken 21 Walkington 16 Paulson 14 Mumm 13 Veigel 13 Jacobson 10 gj m. m mumiM i iyi Kenny & linda 1 1 no Orduna );-: j - J-' Anrwii rn--f Goeller a separated shoulder.
