Diplomat describes African poverty Rain cancels doubleheader The ambassador to the United States from Botswanda Thursday talked with students organizing the Lincoln Walk for Development. Some of the money to be raised by the Walk is slated to go to projects in Botswanda. During the short discussion the ambassador, Linchwe Kgafela, told about his ' Al I IT 1 J' CHURCH airectofyr I country, a nation in south central Africa.. The country is quite dry with an average rainfall of only 13 inches a year, he said There is only one full scale irrigation project in the country and it was built while Botswanda was still a colony. Only about one per cent of farmers in Botswanda farm with machines, the ambassador said. The annual income per person in the country is $96. Kgafela said the other major problem of his country is education. There are simply not enough schools, he added. - Botswanda is about the size of Texas with a population of 660,000. Education in remote areas is very hard to get, he said. But there is a program underway where' the villages build school rooms and the government tries to find money to equip them, he said. The program is working well, he added. The ambassador said that Botswanda is in need of irrigation projects and water conservation plans. Money from the Walk for Development is aimed at these projects. Kgafela will end his trip to Nebraska at a Saturday night dinner in Creighton University's Becker Hall in Omaha. The 6:30 dinner is open to the public and costs five dollars. Proceeds from the dinner will go to the Botswanda school program.
