The big man's range versus the little man's quickness at middle guard Nebraska took a chance on little Ed Periard last season and he turned m an outstanding year at middle guard. Periard is gone, but little Bob Pabis is back to prove the little man's worth at middle guard. Pabis served as backup to Periard last season before being sidelined during the Iowa State game with a knee injury. HE UNDERWENT surgery and will miss the first two weeks of spring drills. Big Monte Johnson (6-6) will now start as the No. 1 middle guard. "We like Monte's range George fights back to sixth Following an opening-round defeat, Joe George of Nebraska came back through the wrestle-backs to capture sixth place in the 167-lb. division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association wrestling championships Saturday at Auburn University. George's early defeat came at the hands of Steve Shields of Lehigh. The decision was given to Shields by the referee after the match had been tied at the end of regulation time and at the end of the first over-time period. Shields went on to capture second place in the 1 67-lb. division. George then came back with two wins on Friday to clinch sixth place. Trying for a higher placing on Saturday, George lost a 2-0 decision to Junior Johnson of Portland State. Johnson in turn went on to win the consolation finals. And in the battle for fifth, George lost a 5-1 decision to top-seeded Eric Dates of Illinois State. The four other Husker wrestlers at the meet all lost their opening matches and the first rounds of their wrestle-backs on Friday. Oklahoma State won the team title for the meet. It was the Cowboy's 27th national championship in wrestling in 40 years of the competition. MAKE A DATE. THURSDAY AAAVUk l IIU1 I Will II AT&30PJA. 1 1 AM tatt reserved. If Monte can develop the quickness he could be an outstanding player for us." Junior College transfer John Bell also joins the race for the middle guard position. NEBRASKA WAS concerned defensively when spring drills opened last year But an outstanding crop of sophomores came through and vetern Jacobson recovered from knee surgery . 1970 was another big year for the Black Shirts. This spring the lack of veterans is not a problem. Sophomores will not be pressed into as many starting postions. Nebraska's defensive unit of 1971 definitely won't be lacking in depth or experience.
