Two groups marked their secret ballots in
front of a member of the other group. But
one of these groups in an attempt to
outsmart the other, filled out two ballots
and switched as it handed in its tally.
"Ideals are a great thing, but most people
are not where they say they are," Peabody
said. "When the heat goes on, you find out
where you are."
But he warned, "In politics a reputation
as a man who keeps his word is terribly
important." , , ,
HE NOTED with regret the loss of
credibility by many in politics. "If they re
not believed, they've lost their power."
As the group entered round three, two
groups had lost all points, two groups were
tied for the lead and one group had dropped
out.
Due to a fluke mistake in marking a
ballot, group II earned the most points.
"People who win in politics are not
necessarily the most brilliant," Peabody
commented, "but those who make the
fewest mistakes."
"Nothing says the most honest and
brilliant people end up on the top. That's
why we have so many idiots in government."
