Soleri wants superstructure city Paolo Soleri considers himself outside of the mainstream of social and political activity - but running parallel to it During a slide show and discussion session Tuesday afternoon he presented his concept for a new type of city which condenses everything into one gigantic superstructure. An architect and former student of Frank Lloyd Wright, Soleri came to the University as part of the World in Revolution Conference. This city would grow up rather than out, thus conserving land space for other use. On an 800 acre area outside of Scottsdale, Ariz., Soleri and his students, about 200 of them, work, draw and build. According to Soleri, they plan to use only about 1 0 per cent of the land space for building and leave the rest untouched. The students use earth castings to create concrete structures with which they build their workshops and STARTS TODAY FOR 7 DAYS! Shown At 2:15, 4:00, 545,7:30, 9:15 PM. LATE SHOW FRI & SAT. 11 P.M. The community is self-supporting and makes ceramics and other objects which they sell. Soleri said he settled in Arizona somewhat by accident. He was born in Italy and came over to the United States to work for Frank Lloyd Wright, who was at the time in Arizona. His working association with Wright terminated because he felt he could do more of what he wanted on his own. His work now is very theoretical and experimantal, trying to develop his concept of archeology, an expression he uses for organic architecture. "Man has the ability of doing the wrong thing very well," said Soleri. "'This is one of the main problems of Western Civilization." The problem that man has now, according to Soleri, is to develop a topography to serve the city-dweller. Experimenting with his concept, he pointed out, is very important because something could go wrong with it. Soleri believes that one defines an environment by how much of it functions for man. All of his structures try to utilize every possible area to serve man in some way. Man the animal is opposite to the vegetable as an organism says Soleri, because the vegetable needs space to spead out in to grow and man is able to derive his energy from the packaged entity, not needing the space.
