Agricultural employers have opposed legislation to allow their employes rights of collective oargaining. Farm workers also were excluded from protection under major labor acts passed by the federal government. Sorensen also pointed out problems in the proposed revenue sharing plan between the federal and state governments. Many states, he said, are not well enough organized to handle caS? these significant funds which would be coming into statehouses. "HOWEVER A MORE serious problem is that some states, especially in the South, have traditionally refused to meet their responsibility to their citizens," he said. "Revenue sharing is a temporary salve, not a solution to the problems," he remarked. His own solution lies in the tax structures of the states. He feels that states must change from a regressive to a progressive tax base. This would involve placing the tax emphasis on income taxes and reducing or eliminating sales and property taxes. "Raising tax rates or re-evaluating property is political suicide for legislators and administrators and meanwhile state institutions are starving. Raising income tax rates occurs less frequently and tax revenues increase with the economy," Sorensen said. TURNING TO POLITICS itself, Sorensen indicated, that political parties are only psychological aspects of our mind. The parties don't exist as far as determining candidiates or policies. Individuals now determine TUESDAY NIGHT IS STUDENT NIGHT the party and its policies. The only functions which the party retains are that of fund raising, organizing campaigns, and political job filling. As far as his own political future is concerned, Sorensen expressed an interest in returning to politics. However he feels it is a mistake to plan too much for politics because in the process of trying to get elected, one could lose the real reasons why he ran in the first place. "Right now I am concerned with doing the things that I like to do," he concluded. use V J I What's a BOOGADIE SPECIAL?
