'No more Santa Barbaras'
The offshore oil industry
doesn't warrant the "beating
it's taking in the press," a
Senior Gulf Coast Geologist for
Sohio Petroleum Company
told a small gathering Thursday
evening in Morrill Hall.
BurVon B. Tettleton told
the group, "Steps have been
taken to assure there will never
be another disaster like that at
Santa Barbara."
Referring to attempts to
dean up oil slicks, Tettleton
said the use of detergents and
other chemicals adds to the
problem by not degrading.

herself," he added.
Tettleton touched briefly
on the subject of pollution
from oil slicks. He stated that
the major polluters are
ocean-going tankers and that
the oil industry has a "fairly
good record",
Drawing on his experience
as a diver and marine life
observer in the Gulf area,
Tettleton assured the group
that the off shore industry has
been compatible with marine
life in the Gulf: "If it isn't it

rpeaking tour, used a film he
had taken and a series of slides
to show that the offshore
industry has "produced a
tremendous population growth
in the Louisiana marine
population."
The slides showed a variety
of marine life using the
platforms as a habitat.
Tettleton said the platforms
provide an environment for
types of fish formerly absent
from the area and have allowed
divers to discover species of
fish never caught in the area
previous to the installation of
the platforms.
He explained that the
platforms provide an increased
surface area for the marine
populace and have provided
protection for forms which
would .otherwise perish.
A University of Oklahoma
graduate, the researcher
presented data showing a
correlation between the
number of platforms and a
steady increase in Gulf states'
commercial fishing since the
initial platform in 1947.
Sport fishing has been on
the upswing since the advent of
the offshore platforms, he
stressed. According to
Tettleton the oil companies
"welcome sport fishermen"
and many prize catches have
been taken in the vicinity of
the platforms.
