    Huskers battle Meely,
other Buffaloes tonight
Nebraska and Colorado will
take identical conference
records into tonight's game at
Boulder, and both are coming
off 'big wins over the
weekend.
Colorado's Cliff Meely set a
conference record 47 points
last Saturday as the Buffs
routed third-ranked Oklahoma,
99-69.
And Chuck Jura threw in a
season high total of 25 points
as Nebraska knocked off
second- ranked Missouri.
Meely raised his conference
scoring average by over two
full points to a league leading
31-7 against the Sooners. The
6-8 senior is a two-time all Big
Eight selection and was Big
Eight player of the year as a
sophomore when he led his
team to the conference title.
Meely also has an outside
chance to become the all-time
scoring leader in the Big Eight.
Meely has scored 1735 points
in three years and will need to
average just under 35 points in
his remaining seven games to
catch the all-time leader, Clyde
Lovellette of Kansas.
"He's the most complete
ballplayer I have coached,"
says head coach Russell (Sox)
Walseth. "He has all the tools
and can help us at all
positions."

Against Oklahoma, Meely
got a lot of help from 6-7
center Jim Creighton and 6-3
guard Dudley Mitchell.
Creighton dropped in 22 points
against the Sooners while
Mitchell contributed 20.
Between the trio, they scored
89 of Colorado's 99 total.
Nebraska, meanwhile, will
try to get another high scoring
performance from Jura to
counter Meely. Jura is
worrying about defense,
however.
"We didn't play very good
defense against Missouri, and
that's what we'll have to do to
win at Colorado," said Jura.
"If we can win at Colorado,
we'll be back in business in the

Nixon's draft proposals will
not affect most deferments
Although President Nixon
has introduced a plan to
abolish student deferments,
most men who were enrolled as
undergraduates as of April,
1970, will be unaffected by the
reform.
According to State
Selective Service Director Col.
Lee Lieeett. the Nixon
proposal would be
retroactive only to April, 1970,
and only men who were issued
deferments after this date
would lose their deferments.
Liggett considers the future
of the deferments provision
uncertain. He does feel that
this proposal is directly linked
with the Nixon
administration's attempt to
establish an all volunteer army.
IF THE STUDENTS
deferments are revoked, young
men who entered school in the
fall semester of 1970 could be
eligible for induction. High
school seniors will be unable to
obtain deferments to avoid
induction, however, many will
have a year to wait until they
receive their lottery numbers at
the age of 19.
Last year's ' Nebraska call
reached 190, as 1,432 of the
nation's 163,500 inductees
were taken from this state.
This is a decrease of about 40
per cent compared to 1969.
Liggett said that draft calls
are up for the first three
months of 1971. More than
140 men were inducted from
Nebraska during January, while
162 men are needed in
February. The March call will
probably be at the same level.
INCREASED CALLS at the
first part of the year are almost
an annual occurance remarked
Liggett. However no student
fulfilling minimal degree
requirements will be inducted
during the semester, because of
a provision in Selective Service

policy allowing a student to
postpone induction until the
end of the semester.
When questioned about the
ceiling of this year's lottery
numbers to be considered,
Liggett, said he could only
present figures from national
Selective Service officials. "The
call should not exceed the
number 195, a figure similar to
last year's maximum call."
LIGGETT POINTED out
that many men had responded
to the call of the local boards
to turn in their II-S deferments
at the end of 1970. By going
I-A and having, a lottery
number higher than the
uppermost number used by
their local board, a person is
placed permanently in the
second priority grouping.
In affect, this action
exempts a man from ever being
considered for induction by
the Selective Service.
A system of priorities has
been established in selecting
qualified individuals to fill
quotas. Volunteers are used
first in as many positions as
possible. The next group in line
is the extended priority
category. These are men who
had numbers below the highest
number used last year by their
local boards, however, they
possessed deferments during
this period and were not
inducted.
Because they lost their
deferments through graduation
or were not making
satisfactoiy progress towards
their degree, they were placed

in the extended priority. These
men remain in this category
during the months of January,
February, and March. After
this time, if they have not been
drafted, they will be placed in
the safer second priority group.
THE THIRD SOURCE of
inductees coming after
volunteers and extended
priorities are the first priorities.
These men complete the quota
of local boards and must meet
three criteria to be placed in,
this category. First they must
be twenty years old during
calender year 1971. Secondly -they
must be classified I-A,
and. finally, have a lottery
number under the highest
number used by their local
boards 1 cfore December 3 1 ,
1971.
Final advice given to young
men by Liggett is to keep in
contact with their local boards.
If in the latter part of this year
a 20 year-old-student's number
doesn't appear to be called, he
should turn in his Il-s
classification and become
classified I-A. This will keep
him safe from further
consideration by his local
board.
