The "grossly inadequate
educational system" is one of
the major perpetrators of
racism in American society, the
president of Chicago's Malcolm
X College charged Wednesday.
Education ought to be a
moral force in this country,
Charles G. Hurst, Jr., told a
crowd of about 200.
The president of the
Chicago community college
said universities should " lead
the struggle in the fight for
self-determination among black
people."
Stating ''moral
responsibility ought to come
from institutions Hurst drew
applause when he said, "The
church has failed and I've given
up on that."
Said- H urst : "The
responsibility of the university
is to be responsible to the
community. We are not going
to achieve justice unless we
speak out on injustice
whereever it may be. "The
university ought to be the most
outstanding example of justice
in the community."
The former lloward
University educator called
"relevancy" the most
important aspect of a college
curriculum: saying the content
of the curriculum should be
"human life."
"It is a discredit to America
that students graduate with no
grasp of racism. The black
student revolution has
contributed in meaningful
ways to education.

The term 'racism' wasn't
legitimized in student affairs
before the black student
revolution, he said. Now no
one is unaffected.
"Anybody born into a racist
society cannot avoid being
affected by it, "Hurst said.
"Once you recognize that
racism exists you can take
steps to deal with it."

racism, black people must stop
dealing with integration in
terms of white people and start
dealing with it in terms of the
black community, he said.

program at Malcolm X College
is permeated with the black

Hurst mentioned that when
he assumed the presidential
duties at the two-year school in
January, 1 969, an 80 per cent
white faculty served the l ,000
students. In the two years since
Hurst took the post the faculty
has become 60 per cent black
and the enrollment has climbed
to 5,000.

way through, people who
know that no black people can
be free until all black people
are free."
Hurst, the first black college
president in Illinois, spoke of
Malcolm X College as a means
to provide responsible black
new campus next fall and
Hurst said he expects the
enrollment to double. Malcolm
X has used church basements,
and empty stores as classrooms
in the past.
"The university is not the
buildings," Hurst said.
"Anywhere students and
teachers come together the
university exists."
Veterans form state group
Four student veteran
organization recently formed
the Nebraska Student Veterans
Association.
Parker Brinson of the
University was elected
president. The group's
immediate goal is to "help
veterans at all the state's
colleges and trade schools
organize vets clubs and to
improve communications
between existing clubs," he
said.
