by Jim Johnston Santa Devaney and Bryant It's December. Time for youngsters to send their want lists to Santa Clause. But it's also time for little Big Red fans to send their picture and souvener requests to Nebraska sports information director Don Bryant and head football coach Bob Devaney. According to Cheryl Cook, Bryant's secretary, request letters are received by the bundles. They ask for anything from an autographed picture of a player to a tip on how to bet on the next game. The ages vary from 7-13 years old. Following are only a few of the many letters received. Names have been omitted in hopes of protecting a few parents. Dear Mr. Bryant, Briant, Bryaint, Brant Dear Mr. Sports Director: I have been listening to all the games this year. I thought that Kansas State was going to beat you Cornhuskers. When it was over I was fooled. After the game was over my dad he won five dollars. There is this pool hall in Beatrice. My dad and about nine other men bet about scores. The one that bets close to it or hits it on the spot will win. They add money to it all the time. All the time they bet. Most the time my dad or mom wins. If you send me a picture of every one of the Cornhuskers players I will give you a dollar. Thank you. Ronald .... Dear Don Briant: I would like a picture of Jerry Tagge and Johnny Rogers. I like football very much. I play with my friends very much. My friends are getting pictures. Yohr friend, Harriet .... p.s. I am a girl. A new winning streak Dar Mr. Don Bryant: I am glad that Nebraska won 13 Ms games straight in a row. I hope, they win the victory because I like them very much. Dear Mr. Don Briant: I would like to have two football pictures. Johnny Rodgers and Paul Jerry Taggie. Glad you win, Randy Ah, the truth is out Dear Mr. Bryant: I'm the one that told about how to send information about those pictures of players. So that's why everybody from Wymore send in for some. Private 1970 Louisiana State gambles; slots come up 3 oranges by JIM JOHNSTON Associate Sports Editor Louisiana State was presented with a challenge three weeks ago a challenge that involved a big gamble. But the Bengals accepted the challenge and Saturday fuJlfilled the final segment of their two-part deal with the Orange Bowl Committee. LSU, offered a tentative Orange Bowl bid upon condition that it beat Tulane and Mississippi, thumped Mississippi's Archie Manning - led Rebels 61-17 on national television Saturday night The Bayou Bengals defeated Tulane 26-14 one week earlier. So with 2:14 remaining in the game with 'Ole Miss, the public address system announced that Orange Bowl tickets for the N e b r aska-Louisiana State game would go on sale on the LSU campus Monday morn ing. Nebraska's three-week bewilderment about who it would play in Miami had finally been answered. But it wouldn't have been Louisiana State if the Bengals hadn't decided to take a big gam ble. LSU was offered a Liberty Bowl bid the same date the Orange Bowl made its tentative offer. It then became the Devaney plucks AP title Nebraska football coach Bob Devaney, who has been receiving all-everything awards this year, Saturday was named the Big Eight Coach of the Year by the Associated Press. Devaney received the same honor a week ago by the United Press International. An AP article said, "Devaney ran away with the voting of sportswriters and sportscasters just as his Cornhuskers ran away with the Big Eight championship." Devaney coached his second undefeated regular season club this season as Nebraska rattled off a 10-0-1 mark. He never has experienced a losing season. When the Huskers take the field In the Orange Bowl New Years night, it will be the seventh time In nine seasons that a Devaney-coached Nebraska team has appeared In a post-season bowl game. THE NEBRASKAN Orange Bowl or nothing for LSU as the Liberty Bowl quickly found another representative. "The team decided to go for broke, a spokesman for the LSU sports Information office said Sunday. "They were very confident of beating Tulane and 'Ole Miss. The team figured that the Orange Bowl had so much more to offer than the Liberty Bowl in prestige and playing a higher ranked team that they couldn't turn it down." The gamble definitely paid off. And the presently eighth ranked Bengals have a chance to prove themselves against the number three team in the na tion Nebraska. Louisiana State, although plagued by a sometimes in consistent offense, has raced to a 9-2 season record and the Southeastern Conference championship. The Fighting Tigers lost their two games by a total of five points. Texas A&M scored on a 79 ' yard pass play with 26 seconds remaining to nip LSU 20-13 in the season opener. Notre Dame's Scott Hemphill booted a 31-yard field goal against LSU three weeks ago, giving the Irish a 3-0 win. The big thing for the Bengals this season has been defense. They have allowed only 8.72 points per game which Includes two shutouts. Texas A&M's 20 point production was the most scored against the Tigers this season. Nebraska is averaging 37.1 points per game. The Huskers have scored 408 points in 11 outings while LSU has allowed only 96 points in as many games. It's the LSU offense that has had its problems. Inconsistency has spelled 61 points for the Tigers against Mississippi and a shutout against Notre Dame. The Bengals, like Nebraska, use a two-man punch at sr TTrnrianw ir wiinwiiri quarterback. Senior Buddy Lee, who stands 6-4 and weights 205, usually gets the starting nod. But sophomore Bert Jones, called the better of the two signal callers by some, plays just as much and lacks only in experience. The Bengals are coached by Charlie McClendon who owns a .740 winning percentage in nine years at LSU. McClendon's teams boast a 69-23-4 mark. LSU is located in Baton Rouge and its colors are purple and gold. But the school quickly turned Orange Saturday night as Bengal backers began throwing oranges on the field two hours before game time. One Mississippi player was hit in the head by an orange and fired it back at the crowd. But the fans continued to toss oranges despite threats from officials that an un-sportsman-like conduct penalty would be called. Louisiana State is ready for Nebraska.
