Gone yesterday, hair today Some ROTC midshinmpn at the University of Nebraska may soon grow a new look. Any Navy ROTC midshipman is now allowed to wear a mustache or a beard because of a recent Z-gram from Adm. Elmo Zumwalt, chief of Naval operations. Previously, each local commander could make the determination for his units, according to Capt Herschel Pahl, professor of Naval science. He added that University Navy ROTC men did not wear beards and mustaches because "our standards did not include wearing them." "I know a number of midshipmen who would look good with mustaches and they'll probably go to wearing one right away," PaW said. "If it looks good on them and their girlfriends like it, I say let them go ahead and do it." Adm. Zumwalt has liberaliz ed grooming standards to con form more with the everyday life of Individuals, Pahl con tinued. The changes instituted through some 57 Z-grams "are all aimed toward making Navy life more fun and en joyable." He predicted approximately 30 percent of the 100-110 midshipmen will make some adjustment in their appearance because of the more flexible regulations. Rules on hair length and Hi PERSON!! Pahl noted that short-hair styles for the Navy were based on occupational standards such as the possible danger from equipment with which some midshipmen work. He added that he does not believe the re quired hair length has been "too arbitrary." "If you want In the Navy badly enough, as you progress to become a professional in that field, it is natural to accept the norms or standards of that profession," he said. The calendar is a pilot pro ject started this summer to provide the campus with in formation on activities and events. December is the last month of the calendar pilot program. "The all-Campus Calendar will be re-evaluated by the Calendar Committee as to Its need and functional value," said Jim Gordon, the calendar program's initial organizer. If a need is demonstrated, the Campus Calendar will become a permanent function of either the administration or the Union, Gordon said. It is now being subsidized by Union funds. "Because this is the last month, we have to demonstrate a need for the calendar," said Gordon. "The best way to demonstrate a need would be for groups to send events and activities to the Program Of fice, room 128 in the Union." To this end, the chib has a program to help provide leaders for youth 4-H clubs around Lincoln. "The clubs are aimed at 7 to 13 year old youths in low in come areas," said Sharen McNally, coordinator of the program. "One hundred University students lead some fifty 4-H clubs for disad vantaged youth." The program began in 1968 as a citizenship program for the University 4-H club in cooperation wiih the County Extension Agency. Volunteer leaders now come from both the Soident Action Front and the University 4-H club. "The 7 or 8 young members of each club are ail city kids, which disproves the old misconception that 4-H clubs are only concerned with cows, McNally said. "We have projects and field trips to keep the kids busy. We hope to show these kids other ways of life."
