Platter places peaceful The AS UN record store and the Dirt Cheap record store are peacefully co-existing. Both stores sell records at prices lower than other record stores. "Both stores are obviously taking away from each others' business," said Bill Chaloupka, ASUN record store manager. "But we are both making money." "It is unfortunate that we didn't know Dirt Cheap was going to open," Chakxipka continued, "or ASUN could have gone into something else besides a record store." Dirt Cheap opened Sept 1, 1970, fourteen days before the ASUN store opened. Both stores stock predominately rock, soul, and rhythm and blues records and tapes. "The Union record store doesn't seem to hurt our business," said Terry Moore of Dirt Cheao. "We are making enough money to give ourselves meet on of your distant cousins! It makes you stop and think. The concept that lower life forms Evolve into higher and higher life forms. It makes you wonder. How far weVe come Since man first climbed down a tree., And how far we have to go. Sure the world needs change. It's easy to see the flaws. It's harder to make things better. That's where you come in. It's on your shoulders now. The whole promise of man .... Dirt Cheap prices are an average of 50 cents lower than the Union's. The Union Store's are approximately 45 cents to a dollar less than local depart ment stores. , ; ri Another discount record store called "One Step Up" is going to open soon, according to Moore. The new store will be located above the Bourbon Lounge. "Dirt Cheap Is set up dif ferently than we are," said Chaloupka. "They buy records as they can afford them. The Union Store has a distributor who orders and stocks our racks. This gives us new releases first, but this is also why Dirt Cheap can undersell us!" "We are looking at ways to lower our prices and improve our stock," he said. "We hope to lower prices as our volume goes up and we may change our distributor." Profits from the ASUN store go to paying off the initial debt If profits are , steady, some money will go to a schol arship fund and some back into the store. ., . , , Calendar .
