Big Med grid machine
runs over Gophers
By JEW JOHNSTON

Minneapolis Nobody ex
pects our Gophers to .foil over
this club. But on the other
hand nobody expects a repeat
of last year's 42-14 Nebraska
win, either.
That's what the University of
Minnesota program read,,
anyway. But don't you, believe

NXT band director, Jack
Snider, Sunday charged Corn.
Cobs with irresponsible conduct
during the Nebraska-Army
football game.
Snider has sent a letter of
complaint to the Corn Cobs
because of an incident that oc
curred in the card section dur
ing half-time of the Sept. 26
game.
Snider charged that the card
section flashed cards spelling;
the word "LOVE" in which the
letter "O"' was drawn as a
peace symbol. Following
"LOVE" the card section
flashed "ARMY". The two
flashea were repeated several
times.
Snider said the band
fraternity is in charge of
designing the signs to be flash
ed, but in this case the LOVE-ARMY-PEACE
exchange was
created without the consent of
either Snider or the band
fraternity.
"The words didn't make any
difference to me.. The issue is
that members of the Corn Cobs
didn't follow their orders,"
Snider said..
Snider said that members of
the band fraternity try to cor
Mexican-American students
University Mexican - Americans have organized the first
Mexican student organization in Nebraska, it was announced
Friday.
Rod Hernendez, student organizer, said the Mexican-American
Student Association (MASA) has the goal of perpetuating
effective processes and structures to provide for continued col
lege recruitment, admission and financing of deserving Mexican
American students.
The first meeting of MASA will be Monday at 7 p.m. in the
Nebraska Union.
Menbership is open to all those interested in furthering the
goals of MASA, Hernandez said.
State auditor checks
strike expenditures
The state auditor's office has
began an audit of Student
Activities to determine if stu
deo fee money was used du
riiwASN strike activity last
May.
State Auditor Ray C. Johnson
said he was requested by the
Legislative Council to begin an
audit of Student Activities
which regulates the student
government's spending.
Officials from the state
auditor's office began looking
at the Student Activities' books
Friday, according to
Johnson.
Sen. Clifton Batchelder of
Omaha requested last week
that the Legislative Council .
investigate ASUfJ's use of stu
dent fees during last May's
strike activity. Batchelder's
VOL 94, NO. 12
relate the card section with the
half-time activites.
When asked if the "LOVE"
flash didn't have something to
do with Army game halftime
(the theme Aquarius), Snider
remarked that the flash simply
wasn't selected by the band
fraternity.
The letter Snider sent was
only a warning and no punitive
action will be taken unless it
happens again, Snider said..
In addition to the band
director's letter a number of
irate Big Red fans have sent
letters to the University and to
the Lincoln newspapers.
One letter which appeared in
a Lincoln paper accused Corn
Cobs of using communist signs
during the game (apparently
referring to the Love-Peace-Army
flash).
"If we wanted to use com
munist signs, Go Big Red
would have been the best one
we could have thought of," Don
Ketzler, Corn Cob card section
chairman said.
Another member of Corn
Cobs, Dyke F. Anderson, said
he didn't think the flashes
showed any disrespect for Gen.
William Westmoreland (who
sat directly across the field
from the card section)..
action came after a resolution
requesting an independent
audit of ASUN and Student
Activities was r e i e c t e d
Wednesday by the ASUN
Senate. The resolution, in
troduced by student Sen. Bruce
Wimmer, died for lack of a se
cond. ASUN is also conducting
their own investigation of
ASUN spending last May.
ASUN President Steve Tiwald
Thursday appointed a com
mittee of three ASUN senators,
including Wimmer.. to in
vestigate the ASUN 5oks.
Tiwald and StudeWActivities
Direcotr Peter Wirtz claim that
no student fee money was used
to support last May's three day
voluntary strike.
