Sevigne tags Wildcats top cross country foes by JIM JOHNSON Associate Sports Editor Nebraska's team strength in cross country and the in dividual strength of Husker standout Greg Carlberg will be tested Saturday. The Oornhuskers host Kan. State in a 10 a.m. duel at Pioneers Park. The Wildcats are tagged by Nebraska coach Frank Sevigne as one of the top outfits in the Big Eight. And defending Big Eight cross country champion Jerome Howe will lead the K Staters Into Lincoln. Nebraska's Greg- Carlberg, a senior from Omaha, finished third ta last year's Big Eight chase and will offer stiff com petition to the defending champ. "Carlberg is number one on our team," Sevigne noted. "He's head and shoulder ahead of everyone else. He's running much better so far this year than last." Carlberg, one of two seniors on the Nebraska squad, turned in a 4:02.8 mile in 1969. "We'll get a good indication where we stand after this weekend' said Sevigne. MWe could have as good a team as last (which finished second In the Big Eight). It all depends on the freshmen." Upper classmen on the squad Include senior Jim Lang from Omaha Ryan, junior Mike Lee from Seattle and sophomore Jim Hawkins from Omaha North. Four freshmen fill out the Cornhuskers' roster. They are: Mike Fertig, Bethesda, Md.: Dan Speck, North Platte; Lynn Hall, Grand Island and Bob Unger, Lincoln Southeast The Cornhuskers were 3-1 in meets last year, losing only to Missouri. Missing from the 136S squad are Pete Brang, who finished second In the con ference, and Mel Campbell. We Never Close Soccer team begins to get kicks Saturday by ROGER RIFE Associate Sports Editor The University of Nebraska soccer team will open Its 1970 season with three games this weekend. Saturday the Huskers will play John F. Kennedy College at 2 p.m. on the football prac tice field west of the Coliseum. The Huskers will travel to Omaha Sunday to compete against the Omaha Martlnking soccer team. The big game for the soccer team will be played Monday at 10 a.m. on the football practice field with the Huskers facing the University of Colorado soccer team. This year's soccer team has a roster of close to 50 players. It is comprised of South American, African, English and American students. Franz Blaha, an English in structor at Nebraska, coaches mis year's kicking crew. Blaha previously coached the University of Gratz soccer team in Austria and played on a semi-pro soccer team for 12 years. Team secretary and vice president, David J. Wishart said: "This year's Nebraska soccer team is probably the best that the University has had." According to Wishart the soccer team has not received financial support from anyone.
