Execs claim strike Silent students can CUE in
support substantial
Continued from page 1
These funds were handled by
the NU Student Activities Of
fice through an account
separate from the regular
AS UN account
The officers also take excep
tion with the Commission's
report that ASUN leadership
"initiated" the strike of
students and faculty against
normal University operations
without proper authority.
At a special ASUN meeting
May 4 the Senators voted that
they were "in favor of a stu
dent strike ... and that this
would free the students for
constructive action . .
But the crucial issue, ac
cording to the letter, is the
question of substantial student
support for the strike.
As evidence that support was
substantial, ASUN officers
state that over 680 students at
tended a special student senate
meeting Monday evening, May
I, while several hundred more
students were at the ROTC
building; that from 8080 to
9000 students voted "over-
whelmlngly" to boycott
classes at the first all
university town hall meeting
and that several thousand
students did participate In anti
war activities.
ASUN action fills
three vacancies
Carrying on the procedure of
regular business, ASUN
Wednesday elected a senator to
Gil the position left vacant by
vice-president John
Humlicek.
Sara Ashby, a sophomore In
English was chosen to
represent Teachers' College.
Miss Ashby said that she would
work in the area of educational
reform, particularly In
rc structuring thow classes that
are "detrimental rather than
beneficial."
In other action the executive
committee ' approved Bob
Johnson, a Junior In accounting
as treasurer, and Mike Ran
dall, a graduate student in
English, as a University
Human Rights Committee
member.
Randall remarked that
he would like to see more
action on the part of the com
mittee this year.
Senator Rita Watson reported
that the search for an om
budsman Is still on. The posi
tion would fill the need for a
mediator between the
university and students as a
reference to authorities.
Committee for Undisrupted
Education (CUE) Is attempting
to organize the "silent majority
of students" Into a working
coalition, according to a state
ment issued by the committee
Tuesday.
The statement said CUE
hopes to back a slate of can
didates in next spring's ASUN
general election. "ASUN as
presently constituted cannot be
permitted to continue acting as
It has in the past," the state.
ment said.
CUE 'charged that last
spring's strike was actively
supported by only five per cent
of the student body with no at
tempt by ASUN to poll the stu
dent body as to its opinion on
the strike.
"Student government
generally has a bad reputation
and this reputation Is
strengthened by such actions as
ASUN took last May in in
itiating the strike," the state
ment continued. Also question
ed by CUE was the use of stu
dent government funds In last
spring's strike activities.
The committee also stated
that it has distributed 10,000
leaflets urging disavowal of the
May strike and seeking funds
for a campaign to "stop the
radical machines that control
campuses."
In a story printed in the Lin
coin Journal Tuesday, CUE
vice-president Ralph E.
Larson, a second-year law stu
dent, stated that CUE is seek
ing contributions to cover ex
penses as members have so far
paid some $400 in expenses
"out of pocket."
CUE'S statement also con
tained references to the report
of the Institute of Political
Analysis (IPA), on last spring's
disturbances, which also
criticized ASUN's actions. The
CUE statement noted that the
committee was "very in
terested" hi the IPA report and
felt that several areas should
be investigated further.
"If we can get them
(students) organized, you'll see
a drastic change in student
government," Larson said.
