the lead before halftime as
Tagge fired a 1 5 - y a r d
touchdown pass to super
sophomore Johnny Rodgers.
Nebraska enjoyed a 14-7
halftime advantage.
"That Nebraska has got one
hell of a team," ,. quipped a
photographer from the Los
Angeles Times. "I thought the
game would be over at halftime
and I could leave early. But
I'm not gonna leave this one
early ... not a chance."
And ft was a tough game to
leave as the decisive underdog
Nebraska Cornhuskers proved
themselves before a West Coast
crowd of 73,768 paying
customers, 12,000 of them
Nebraska rooters decked out in
the traditional red.
Southern Cal struck first in
the second half as Charlie
Evans dove across from the
one and Ayala kicked the extra
point to tie the score again, 14
14 with 8:35 remaining in the
third period.
But Nebraska's Joe Orduna,
who was selected the game's
top offensive performer, broke
loose for a 67-yard touchdown
run in the same period that
pushed the Huskers in front 20
14. Paul Rogers then kicked his
third extra point.
"The play is what we call a
43 counter trap," related
Orduna after the game. "I just
cut back to the left and the
linemen did the rest. They did
a terrific job of blocking the
entire game."
Nebraska coach Bob
Devaney also commented on
Orduna's run. "His (Joe
Orduna's) 67-yard run was the
kind of play which he takes a
pitch to the right and is sup
posed to run to daylight. He did
it perfectly."
Jones, who seems to pass
better under pressure, fired
several clutch ariels during the
Trojans 80-yard drive which
resulted in the Trojans tying
the score on Clarence Davis'
nine-yard run.
Ayala kicked his third extra
point to end the scoring at 21
21. When it was over, Trojan
boss John McKay was quizzed
about the possibility of trying
for the two-point conversion
after the Trojans final
touchdown.
"We would have gone for
two," he said, "if there were
five minutes or less left."
McKay was hoping his Tro
jans would hold the Husker's
potent offensive attack and
reclaim the ball. They did,
three times, but Troy failed to
find pay dirt.
Nebraska had a chance to
take a 10-point lead before the
Trojans scored their final
touchdown, but a Paul Roger's
field goal attempt from the 12
yard line ws wide to the
right.
"The snap was a little tow,"
said Nebraska quarterback
Jerry Tagge who was holding
for Rogers. I should have had it
on the tee a little better. It has
to he perfect and it wasn't. But,
I guess It's Just one of those
things."
And a tie instead of a win for
Nebraska was just one of those
things. The Huskers felt they
outplayed USC. and they were
not disappointed with their
performance, only the final
score.
