Los Angeles Nebraska's
1970 "Black Shirt" defense
came of age at the Los Angeles
Memorial Coliseum Saturday
night. .
Just ask Southern California
head coach John McKay.
"Nebraska has as good a
defense as we'll see in the
Pacific Eight this year," said
the USC head coach. "They've
come a long way from reports
we had. But I told our kids
before the game that they were
playing one of the best coached
teams in the nation and not to
be surprised at anything."
McKay compared last year's
Husker defense to the one
presented at Los Angeles
Saturday night. "Last year we
gave up 21 points to Nebraska
and still won," McKay said
referring to the 31-21 belting
USC handed the Huskers in the
1969 opener.
"But this year we couldn't
score 31 points like we did in
1969. And we have a much im
proved offensive backfield this
year. So the statistics speak for
themselves when you talk
about comparing teams," said
McKay.
Devaney also praised the NU
defense.
"We decided to use a three
deep defense, because last year
the Trojans boat us with three
bombs. That's why they were
able to complete the short
passes by getting their

receivers behind our
linebackers. But overall, our
defense played real well.
"It's difficult to single out
individuals, but defensively our
middle guard (Ed Periard)
played an excellent game,"
Devaney said. -
Periard stands just 5-9 and
weighs only 201, which isn't big
for a middle guard. But the
scrappy defensive lineman,
who goes around rather than
through opponents, grabbed six
tackles and assisted in five
others.
Husker linebacker Jerry
Murtaugh, who was selected on
Playboy Magazine's a 1 1 -America
team led the
Nebraska defensive charge
with 14 unassisted tackles and
11 assists.
Two other pleasing aspects of
the Husker defense were
defensive end Willie Harper
and cornerback Joe Blahak.
Harper did a fine job in con
fining the elusive Jimmy Jones
and Blahak interce,pled one
pass while working in the
secondary.
Backfield veteran Jim
Anderson, who didn't feel the
Husker defensive secondary
was tested in the Wake Forest
game, was pleased with their
performance against such
name receivers as Bob
Chandler and Sam Dickerson.
"I thought we covered real
well," said Anderson. "We
tried to shut off the long one
and we did"
