Committee studies refusal to hire Davis
by JOHN DVORAK
Nebraskan Staff Writer
A select University of
Nebraska faculty committee is
investigating the case of
Michael Davis, the University
of Michigan graduate assistant
who was refused a job at NU.
But, there is some question just
how much of the investigation
results will be made public.
"We will investigate it (the
case) as much as we can," said
Richard E. Gilbert, chairman
of the Faculty Liaison Com
mittee, a nine-member group

that represents the faculty in
many matters pertaining to the
University's general welfare.
The Liaison Committee has
already spoken with the
Regents, and will talk to them
again in the future, Gilbert, a
professor of chemical
engineering, said. He would not
reveal the substance of the
discussion. The committee has
also spoken with Lincoln Cam
pus President Joseph Soshnik
about the case.
It has been speculated that a

building, staged by Davis to
dramatize the need for more
student voice in policy-making
at that school, prompted the
Regents to disapprove the ap
pointment at their August
meeting.
Some faculty and students
have deplored the Regents ac
tion, saying that it is an
abridgement of academic
freedom and will tend to
discourage free speech and
thought.
Other teachers and students
have approved the action,
saying that it will keep
troublesome and potentially
dangerous faculty members out
of the University.
Still others have delayed
their opinions, saying not

the case.
The Liaison Committee's
report, scheduled for delivery
at the Oct. 13 Faculty Senate
meeting, will not air any "dirty
laundry," Gilbert emphasiz
ed. 'We probably won't divulge
anything more than has
already appeared in the
newspapers," he continued. "If
there is more to the case than
that, we would leave it up to
higher authority to release it or
not."
Said Gilbert: The report will
consist of Liaison Committee
reaction to and opinions of the
Board of Regents' decision to
axe Davis' appointment to the
faculty, which had been
previously okayed by Robert E.
Dewey, chairman of the
philosophy department, Melvin
D. George, dean of the Colleg?
of Arts and Sciences, and
unofficially by C. Peter
Magrath, dean of faculties.
"We haven't written the
report yet and I have no idea
what we are going to say,"
Gilbert said. "We are most in
terested in protecting Davis.
We do not want to hurt Davis
or the University by bringing
things out in public that
shouldn't be "

Jerry L. Petr, vice president
of the University of Nebraska

the AAUP has not become in

A teacher involved in the
case would have to request
AAUP intervention, Petr said.
No such request has been
received and he said the AAUP
would not initiate any action.
