Astro-Turf
saves Orduna9 s
touchdowns?
Husker halfback Joe Orduna
wonders if he might have fal
len during his touchdown runs
in Saturday's game with Wake
Forest had the field been of
real grass instead of Astro
Turf. Saying this, Orduna touched
on a question which has been
on the minds of many Husker
fans recently: "Is Astro-Turf
worth it?"
Installation of the Astro
Turf rug was completed in late
July, making Nebraska one of
four schools in the Big Eight
to install an artificial playing
field at a cost of over $250,
000. Another Husker halfback
Johnny Rodgers believes that
Astro-Turf's biggest asset is
that it allows the runner to
turn easier. "It also enables
you to run faster than on
grass," he added.
The Astro-Turf has had an
affect on the kicking aspect of
football. "You don't have any
trouble placing the ball, says
N.U. place-kicker Paul Rogers.
"Its a lot easier to kick on the
turf than on grass.'
While there is much praise
for the Astro-Turf, there 'is
some criticism too. "The turf
is harder on the regular con
ventional type football shoe
than regular grass,' says Bib
Babcock, N.U.'s equipment
manager. "The knees of the
pants are really getting worn
out fast on the turf."
