    Faculty defeats student appeal
By refusing to alter the calen
dar for fall in any way, the majority
of the faculty at yesterday's Faculty
Senate meeting succeeded in reas
serting the axiom that students are
niggers.
Hiding behind parliamentary
procedure and expedient appeals the
action effectively says to many con
cerned students: Your concerns are
not as valuable as the good will of
the doling legislature.
Morality was successfully out
bid. It is a farce to expect students
to believe that the wishy-washy en
dorsement of "no sanctions' has any
meaning at all. Perhaps teachers will
be prevented from giving hour ex
ams or papers in that two week per
iod, but perhaps will come a quiz,
or an hour exam the day of the elec
tion, or a test over that material of

campaign.
But more basic than that is the
obvious point that many students
who miss two weeks of class find it
impossible to complete the semester.
No one need mention what possible
sanction power this has over a stu
dent with a I-S deferment.
Likewise it is farcical to expect
students to trust any sort of pro
posed review board to enforce the
t4no sanction' rule. The experiences
of the past few weeks,, and of years
in unresponsive departments have
convinced students they have no re
course as far as many faculty are
concerned.
Matching this sellout indeed
surpassing it was the amendment to
the Human Rights Commission re
port Benign what? But where will
the faculty be this summer: where
ever, but not at 27th and Vine and
not at 24th and Lake.
There are perhaps three groups
who must feel vindicated: those fac
ulty who chose expediency those
people who would deny any dissent
ing voice and the radicals whose
prophecies are being realised.

Two views on
faculty action
(Editor's note: Following Thursday's Faculty
Senate meeting a faculty member and a student
quickly responded to the Daily Nebraskan.)
Dear Editor:
Yesterday's action by the faculty amounts to
a total moral and ethical refusal to accept the
responsibility placed on the faculty of the University
of Nebraska to act in a manner befitting pro
fessors who teach the virtues of citizenship.
At the point of student disturbance the faculty
voted to accept the principle of student participation.
When the confrontation was over the majority of
the faculty returned to playing parliamentary games
and adopted an immoral position.
When the faculty essentially voted against the
increasing participation of minority group students
and when it accepted Professor Braeman's
formulation of altering the report of the Committee
on Human Rights the majority of the faculty en
dorsed the worse racist principles that go funda
mentally against justice in the United States
of America..
For those of us who have supported the middle
course who have counseled against violence the
action of the majority of the faculty comes as
a tragic and unfortunate reversal Let all of us
in the future remember John Kennedy's words
"Those who make peaceful change impossible
make revolutionary change inevitable.

Dear Editor:
I am sick and tired of people telling me to
work within the system and then acting in such
a manner as to make it impossible to do so.
I had counted on spending the pre-election months
working for anti-war candidates realizing that the
crucial period of the campaign is the two weeks
immediately prior to election day.
Now the faculty has apparently told me that
they will not let me do so. If I choose to fulfill
my civic responsibilities I must complete 15 weeks
of classwork in only 13 weeks. Whether we like
to label it as such or not that amounts to a
penalty.
Having recently visited Senators and
Congressmen as a representative of University
students, I was repeatedly urged by them to change
American policy by changing American
policymakers. That option is now largely foreclosed
to concerned students by the action of the faculty.

Cambodia . . . two views
(Editor's note: The Daily
Nebraskan recently received
this letter from a serviceman
in Cambodib.))
Dear Editor
Thank you for jour support
' in the condemnation of the
President's recent actions in
Cambodia. News stories of
protest throughout the nation
are the only morale boosters
we have in Cambodia.
I, speaking for a majority of
the members of this unit
presently in Cambodia, ap
preciate the concern you have
shown for our welfare and
more important for the
welfare of our nation. Many of
today's so-called 'leaders pull
the American soldier into their
arguments telling the silent
majority that to support their
policies of aggression they are
saving our lives. These leaders
have not bothered to take a poll
of Americans in Vietnam and
Cambodia. They either do not
recognize or they Ignore our
deep resentment at being used
as a patriotic shield for their
aggressive and unpopular ac
tions In Southeast Asia and at
home.
Only through constant protest
and determined information
programs can you ear
representatives In American
society stop the madness of
war and put the voice of the
people back in the leadership of
America.
Sincere thanks
