force an instructor to except an
absence. He added that few in
structors failed to accept an
excuse signed by a dean under
the absence rule.
' Chatfield also noted that
every college now has a
grading committee. If an in
structor refused to accept the
excuse, an appeal could be
made to one of these com
mittees. Wallace M. Rudolph, pro
fessor of law, pointed out that
the excused absence policy
should be emphasized in senate
action because one professor
could "chill a good many
6tudents".
He added, "It is doubtful thai
some professor will say a stu
dent can't go to a funeral, but it
isn't very doubtful that some
professor might say a student
can't carry on campaign ac
tivities during class time."
Also speaking at the open
meeting, D w a y n e Arf f ,
agricultural engineering stu
dent, noted that Option One
would shorten the summer
work period for students.
Arff said that this might
cause some students financial
hardships or even make some
jobs unavailable.
Richard S. Harnsberger,
professor of law, said that the
University as an institution
should retain a politically
neutral position. He added,
however, that the problem is to
involve students, many of
whom are under 21 and cannot
vote, in the political process.

Citizens wishing to change
American Southeast Asian
policy by working for peace
oriented candidates for Con
gress are meeting for the first
time 7:30 p.m. Thursday in
the Union Ballroom.
Movement For A New Con
gress is being organized as
part of a nation-wide move
ment which originated and is
headquartered at Princeton
University.
