The Nebraska track team is down to its
last chance in its effort to pick up a gold
medal on the outdoor relay circuit this
season.
The Huskers close out the relay portion
of their schedule next weekend at the
Drake Relays in Des Moines after failing
to nab any first places at'the Texas and
Kansas Relays.
Although his squad failed to accomplish
its main mission at the Kansas Relays
last Friday and Saturday, Nebraska
track coach Frank Sevigne wasn't
dissatisfied.
"The kids ran pretty good, even though
we didn't win anything," Sevigne said.
"You can't complain about three seconds
out of five relays."
The Huskers grabbed second places in
the sprint medley relay, the mile relay,
and the 440 relay and thirds in the two-
mile relay, and four-mile relay.
Hopeton Gordon and Randy Butts were
the only Nebrska individuals who placed.
Gordon was second in the long jump with
a leap of 23-9, and Butts finished third
in the 120-yard high hurdles with a .-14.2
clocking.
Nebraska school records were set by
the sprint medley and the four-mile relay
quartets. The sprint medley team of John
Mottley, Don Quarrie, Garth Case, and
Dan Morran was clocked in 3:18.8, and
the four-mile relay team of Mel
Campbell, Pete Brang, Mike Lee, Greg
Carlberg turned in a time of 16:39.7.
The four-mile relay was highlighted by
performances turned in by Campbell and
Carlberg. Carlberg was clocked in 4:05.8
on his mile leg and Campbell ran 4:07.8.
"It was the best time Campbell has ever
had by far," Sevigne said.
NU came closest to grabbing a first
place in the 440 relay. Horace Levy,
Leighton Priestley, and Quarrie built up
a slim lead for anchorman Case, but the
sophomore speedster was unable to hold
off Oklahoma State's Earl Harris. The
Cowboys were clocked in :40.9 and the
Huskers in :41.1.
Sevigne indicated he will make some
personnel changes in an effort to find a
winning relay combination for Drake. He
added that the competition will be
tougher in Des Moines than it was at
Kansas with the addition of Big Ten,
southwest, and several eastern schools. '
