    Orduna flashing
old running form
Nebraska halfback Joe Orduna is providing the
most optimism in the Musker football camp this spring,
but NU's Black Shirts have to rank a close second.
THE TOP defensive team bottled up Nebraska's
best offensive unit in a scrimmage Wednesday.
The results may be viewed in two ways:
First, the Huskers' offensive team, with most of
its strength returning, is not producing as effectively
as expected.
Or secondly, Nebras-
ka's defensive team, hit
hard by graduation, is
ready to keep its national .
defensive reputation an-
other year.
Hopefully, the second
explanation is the case.
And hopefully, Ordu-
na's effective running in
Wednesday's scrimmage is
an indication of things to
come.
Orduna ". . . looked
good running the ball,"
Nebraska coach Bob De-
Joe Orduna
vaney conceded in evaluating the work of the Husker
speedster who gained 1,134 yards in his first two sea
sons before being red-shirted last year because of a
knee injury.
"WHEN HE hurdled that first tackier the first time
he carried the ball I knew that he wasn't holding back,"
NU physio-therapist George Sullivan said of Orduna.
Orduna ran with the second offensive unit, quarter
backed by Jerry Tagge. Although it operated against the
second defensive outfit, Devaney allowed that Tagge's
unit seemed to be more effective and that Tagge was
throwing better than first team quarterback Van
Brownson.
The top offense had trouble in generating any kind
of an offense. Ed Periard, defensive middle guard and
veteran linebacker Jerry Murtaugh were, for the most
part, responsible for the containment.

S teeplechase 660
new NU obstacles
Who says there is nothing new in store for
Nebraska's track team Saturday?
THE CORNIIUSKERS, who face Minnesota at
Minneapolis in a dual meet, will compete in the
660 and the 3,000 meter steeplechase an event
used in the Big Ten, the Pacific Eight, the Western
Athletic Conference and in the NCAA meet.
"The Big Eight will eventually have to use this
event," says assistant track coach Dean Brittenham."
We're just penalizing ourselves in the NCAA by not
using it."
He adds that Kansas is the only Big Eight school
capable of holding steeplechase event.
NU's entrants in the new events are Garth Case
and Mike Randall (660) and Mike Lee (steeplechase).
Garth won the 600 indoor Big Eight championship
as a freshman and a sophomore.
Brittenham termed Minnesota one of the Big Ten's
toughest crews, owning a 4:01 miler and a seven-foot
high jumper.
"WE'RE HOPING for a good day," Brittenham
said. "As we get more adjusted outdoors, we should
continue to improve." Expected to use the weather
to good advantage are Greg Carlberg, mile, Dan
Morran, 880, and Mel Campbell, three mile.
Carlberg ran a 4:06 mile on the anchor leg of
the distance medley relay at the Texas Relays. Morran
is nearing 1:51 in the 880, and Campbell has been
under 14:00 in the three mile.
The Huskers will compete in the Kansas Relays
on April 17 and 18, and the Drake Relays on April
24 and 25.
