Booharr 'Two ''children' the limit, more a 'sin9 by CAROL ANDERSON Nebraskan Staff Writer Unless the population ex plosion stops soon the world has three choices. It can kill off its people surplus with a massive plague, a world war or pollution. These are the alternatives facing man according to Richard Boohar, assistant pro fessor of zoology and physiology. "We have a breathing space but not much. What we do with that breathing space had better be right," Boohar warned. "Birth control is an absolute necessity not a theory any more," he said. People must understand that "two (offspr ing) is the limit and more is a sin." Boohar admitted that im- p it) j ,..., plementation of effective birth control is a dilemma. Although "it should be done by the consciences of people," he said, practically,, govern ment has the only effective machinery for implementing birth control. "When you get down to the point of survival, you have to use what works." Boohar con ceded that such methods would encroach on the individual's civil liberties, but "civil liberties are a luxury when it comes to survival." "We can make it if everybody starts working now," he said. By work Boohar means that technological pro cesses must stop using up the oxygen and polluting the en vironment; people must learn to eat things that they may not consider food; and new ways of distributing food must be found. But none of these efforts wpir (MMW tamsas t rfi . ft If you're tired of using two or more separate so lutions to take care of your contact lenses, we have the solution. It's Lensine the all-purpose lens solution for com plete contact lens care preparing, cleaning, and soaking. Just a drop or twoof Lensine beforeyou insert your contacts coats and lubricates the lens surface making it smooth er and non-irritating. Cleaning your contacts with Lensine retards the buildup of foreign de posits on the lenses. Lensine Is sterile,, self sanitizing,, and antisep tic making it ideal for storage of your lenses between wearing periods. And you get a removable storage case on the bot tom of every bottle, a Lensine exclusive for proper lens hygiene. It has been demonstrated Bacteria cannot grow In Lensine. Caring for con tact lenses can be as coo venient as wearing them with Lensine, from tht Murine Company, I no. that improper storage between wearlngs may result in the growth of bacteria on the lenses. This Is a sure cause of ey t Irritation and could seri ously endanger vision. Woii will help unless the population stops growing, he emphasiz ed. No one questions the value of saving an Indian baby's life by immunizing it against malaria. But humanitarians should start questioning that practice if the baby later starves to death as an adult and leaves behind offspring to suffer the same fate, Boohar said. An initially "good" act may cause greater "evil" he said. Currently, man and his technological activities are us ing up the earth's oxygen sup ply close to the rate green plants can reproduce it, ac cording to Dr. Boohar. Men in developed countries have 50 times more effect on their en vironment than men in un derdeveloped societies such as India, he continued. Man is approaching the limit for the amount of food he can produce, Boohar added. "We can't depend on the sea for food" because currently man is using continuously, about 60 per cent of the sea's nutritional output. This will lead to ESSr I: In ft 7 j-4 m Uiw JT OUT 40 im 9 u 1434 "0" Street Phoom 477-6603 replenishment problems if more than 100 per cent of the output is taken from the sea, the zoology professor explain ed. Even if developed countries could feed the world's people, it doesn't mean that the world's living standards would be raised, he said. Boohar said his private guess is that the earth does not possess enough "metals, oil and water to go around to raise the world's living standards to the American level." If the world's wealth were evenly distributed, Americans would be living at a standard not much higher than an Indian hovel, he contends. Boohar thinks work on con trolling population should begin in the developed countries where man has more impact on his environment. SnasJdt&WL?
