Quintet, Record Review by TERRY SCHMITT One of the finest, most overlooked, American rock groups is the Sir Douglas Quintet. "Together After Five" their newest album on Smash Records, is a gas. While you might remember their teenybop hit, "She's About A Mover," the group is much more talented. The group comes from Texas and plays what might be called "Tex-Mex" rock. Douglas Sahm is the group's figurehead, vocalist, songwriter, and guitarist. The songs, while varied, all contain an in describeable earthiness. While moving from ballads to blues shuffles to raucous rock. Sir Douglas sings from his Norfolk hits bigtime? by FRED EISENHART Entertainment Editor I know you will find this hard to believe, I did: but culture has come to Norfolk. That's right folks, Norfolk, Nebraska. No, Johnny Carson isn't going home, but BUDDY RICH and his 18-piece band will perform there Saturday night. The old King's Ballroom has come under new management and Rich and his band are supposedly the first of many nationally known groups that are to perform there. It starts at 9 p.m. and the Ballroom stays open till 1 a.m. You don't have to be 20 to get in but if you are they sell beer. Tickets are $3 at the door, or call Max Gronenthal at ,477-7607 in Lin coln and he will sell them to you for $2.50. As Sir Douglas once boastfully sang, "You just can't live in Texas if you don't hav souL v "The Hunter" (Blue Thumb) . is a low-down and dirty blues album by Ike and Tina Turner. If you've only heard their terribly produced "River Deep Mountain High" album, then you ain't heard nothin' yet. Unlike many of the white blues guitarists, Ike Turner's guitar playing, like B. B. King, depends not on speed or quan tity of notes, but on ex pressiveness and feeling. Ike can get more out of a single note than Alvin Lee of Ten Years After can get out of a whole phrase. If you have seen or heard Tina then there is nothing to say. Her sexy, deep, and mean voice will cut you right to the bone. The whole thing is held together by a good rhythm section of bass, drums and horns. ;'WM r' One of Shakespeare's best known comedies, "A Midsummer Night's Dream' will be presented at the Howell Theatre two consecutive weekends beginning Wednesday, March 11. James Taylor's new release, "Sweet Baby James" on Warner Brothers, is an im provement on his first album on Apple Records. The main problem with the first Apple release was its overarrangements. Often clut tered by too much backup, as strings and horns, Taylor's songs seem much better suited for smaller backup, the technique used on the new album. Taylor is an electric songwriter and has talent as a good guitarist and expressive singer. He often uses blues and folk idioms and, occasionally, country flavor, as "Sweet Baby James," the best song on the album. While this is a good album, he should really know where he's at by his next album. i-'i . ... e .if ft Mo U Tburs., Mar. 5 through Mar. 22.
