"The actual threat is that this will retard scientific research and substitute political propaganda for scien tific fact," said Freedman, University of Chicago Depart ment of Philosophy chairman. Dr. Freedman said this Is the problem with marijuana. The research on the facts about the drug were stopped by the federal government. He said it is impossible to educate the people if the facts are unavailable. IN THE DRUG problem, Freedman named two "epidemics". "One is the t 1970 THE ' ' iY f ' 77 i iLl : In h 3 I S .. it politics with epidemic of drug Interest; the other of drug trial and ex perimentation," he said. Freedman said the mass media made drug interest "fashionable." He feels the press has overreacted to drug usage. "The overreactionhas lesulted in legislative and social casualties," he added. People like Bud Wilkinson, "the President's expert on drugs," have great problems measuring the "epidemic" of drug interest. They are likely to believe half-truths because of the intense interest by the press, he said. THE SECOND epidemic is 1 : -4i.-.ww.aV-.-.-.4V..a .-Mt.i.x.h. L.a 6...N .- 4 ,.4 ...w a'-aM. On the relationship between marijuana and hard-core drugs, Freedman said there are no pharmacological con nections that make the use of marijuana lead to hard-core drug usage. "The connections are social, economical and psychological," he said. "The people who use mari juana to escape into a permanent dream world will go to the harder drugs," Freed man said. As long as it is used to escape temporarily, like alcohol is used, "I see no man datory connection," Freedman said. Freedman said the problem of using marijuana recrea tionally must be resolved the public. The dilemma Freedman saw was whether society wanted to "turn inward on grass" or "outward on booze." The danger is in the polarization of our society, ac cording to Freedman. He said, "If that happens, I have no doubt the Silent Majority will win." w h A- I . V ,M . ; wW I M 1 1
